Hitomi and Takuro are delighted to invite you to join us at the Penland School of Craft for an upcoming workshop in Spring 2027. It is an honor to return to this inspiring community, and we look forward to making pots with you.

Watching this old video from our time at Cub Creek brought a flood of wonderful memories rushing back. Seeing those familiar faces and hearing their voices reminded us just how fortunate we were to spend those seven months with such amazing people. Time really does fly—back then, we were much younger, full of endless energy, and blessed with strong knees!

23 years ago, right after Hitomi finished her program at UMass Dartmouth, when we became part of the inaugural group of residency artists at Cub Creek Foundation in Appomattox, Virginia. To get to work in the brand-new studio, we started by building our own tables and shelves. We dug red wild clay from the pit right next to the studio, processed it to make pots, split and stacked piles of firewood, and fired the Noborigama kiln together with John Jessiman, three fellow residents, and local ceramic artists.

We extend a huge thank you to Randy and Cricket Edmonson for sharing this old VHS recording with us, and for their steadfast support from our days at Cub Creek until today. Plate/ An Open Corner

The missing corner transforms the plate through both function and form. During firing, the opening allows the plate to fit more efficiently within the circular space of a kiln, making better use of the firing chamber. At the table, the cutout creates a natural point of access for serving food while offering a comfortable place to hold the plate. What appears to be an absence becomes an opportunity, revealing how removing material can create new possibilities.
