Most people assume they have to choose. Either a home that looks the way they've always wanted, or one their kids can actually live in without being told not to touch anything.

For our Snohomish Remodel, the goal was timeless, yet able to withstand everything a family of six would throw at it.

Those two things pull against each other more than people expect. Timeless usually means restrained and a little precious. Daily life with four kids means the opposite. Our job was to find the version of this home where both were true at the same time.

First, we reassigned rooms that weren't earning their space and opened up the areas the family actually gathers in. Only then did we move into finishes and furnishings chosen to take the wear without showing it. Five years in, these clients are happier than ever in their home.

Potential can be easy to feel, but hard to act on. You can walk through a house, sense that something better is possible, and still have no idea what it would actually take to get there.

That's usually where we come in.

When our clients bought this home in Snohomish, it had been neglected for years, and everything in it was builder-grade and dated. They bought it anyway, because the lot, the views, and the bones were enough. Five acres, the Cascades on one side and the valley on the other, and room for a family of six.

Turning that into a forever home took reworking the main floor layout, reimagining an unfinished basement into a full entertainment level, and giving four kids bedrooms with real character of their own.

A lot of people hesitate to hire a designer because they don't think they have taste. They can't name a style, they don't know what they want, and they assume that makes them a bad client.

It doesn't. It's actually the normal starting point.

Interior design gets treated like decoration. It's closer to translation. Someone tells us they want their home to feel calm, or that they want their kids to be able to live in it without being told not to touch anything, or that mornings in their kitchen are stressful and they don't know why. Our job is to turn that into a floor plan, a material, a piece of furniture that actually delivers it.

Most people plan a kitchen by browsing photos of other people's kitchens. It's a reasonable place to start, but it's also how you end up with a mixer lift you never use and no room for the thing you reach for every morning.

The best part of a custom kitchen is that none of it has to apply to anyone else. Check out a few favorites from our Snohomish Remodel here! This family bakes and hosts constantly, so those features earned their space. A different family would get a different list entirely, and that's the whole idea.

We've designed kitchens across the greater Seattle area, and the question we always start with isn't what you want it to look like. It's how you actually use the room.

Tell us how you cook and we'll design around it: https://www.kimberleemarie.com/contact-us/

Anyone with kids knows the sound of a full house... Someone's looking for a shoe, someone else has a friend over, and there's music coming from an unknown location. It's wonderful, and it is constant.

Which is exactly why the primary suite in our Snohomish Remodel had one job: be the oasis.

We used texture, rather than color, to get there. A neutral grasscloth wallpaper gives the walls warmth and depth without a single pattern to look at, so the room feels layered and completely calm at the same time. Restrained, but never bare. It's the retreat our clients need after a long, loud, good day.

Every kitchen works hard, but a well-designed kitchen means working smarter, not harder.

Intentional counter space means people can cook together instead of bumping elbows. Better flow between kitchen and dining means no one's stuck on the other side of a wall during a dinner party. Storage that's actually accessible means less searching, less clutter, less frustration.

We think about this on every kitchen we design, and our Cedar Park Mid-Century Kitchen Remodel is a great example of it in action: small, functional decisions that add up to a space this family actually enjoys using every day.

Ever wonder what a day at a design firm actually looks like behind the scenes?

Between client meetings, sourcing trips, and juggling a dozen projects at once, our days rarely go exactly as planned, and that's just part of the fun. A "quick stop for samples" can turn into an hour of debating tile options, and a 10am meeting has a way of becoming 10:07am once you factor in real life. It's chaotic, it's collaborative, and it's exactly what makes this work so enjoyable.

After years of running a full-service design firm here in Seattle, we've learned that the best days are the ones full of a little bit of everything, and a team that can laugh through it together.

Every family lives differently, and that's exactly where good design should start.

For this Cedar Park family, the project began with their daily routines of how they cook, how they gather, how they actually move through their kitchen on a normal Tuesday. That's what shaped every decision: more counter space so they could prep and cook together, better flow between the kitchen and dining room so no one felt cut off from the conversation, and color that felt true to them.

Walnut is the classic choice for mid-century cabinetry. It's what you'd typically expect to find in a home from this era. But every project we work on deserves its own take, and for our Cedar Park Mid-Century Kitchen Remodel, we opted for white oak instead. It brought in a lighter, airier feel while still keeping the warm, natural wood tone that mid-century style is known for.

We carried the same thinking into the dining room, where we refinished the clients' existing mid-century table and chairs rather than replacing them, reupholstering the seats in a blue-green tweed true to the period. This project has become one of our favorite examples of how to honor a design era without copying it exactly. Sometimes the best move is to take the spirit of a style and adapt the materials and details to fit how a family actually lives today.

Have an older home you'd love to update while still keeping its character? We'd love to talk through what that could look like. Get in touch: https://www.kimberleemarie.com/contact-us/

One of the best parts about bringing in a designer? They have the tools to make your home way more functional for everyday life, without losing what makes it feel like home.

That's exactly what happened with our Cedar Park Mid-Century Kitchen Revival. This busy family now has a kitchen built for the way they actually live: more counter space for cooking together, a layout that keeps everyone in one room instead of splitting up around a wall, and color that makes the space feel as lively as their household does.

The transformation didn't mean starting over. The kitchen kept its mid-century bones; we just brought in bold color and warm wood tones to bring those roots into today. That palette now runs through the kitchen and the adjacent dining room, tying the two spaces together.

It's one of our favorite examples of how the right design changes can transform not just how a space looks, but how it actually functions for daily life.
