We recently shared the Queen Anne subterranean DADU and garage that lives below this backyard, and now we get to share the backyard itself, where Lunawood shows up again as decking. 🌿

SHED Architecture & Design designed a living room deck for taking in the view, a spiral stair connecting it to an existing terrace, and curved concrete walls enclosing an outdoor dining area, hot tub, and sun deck that look out over the DADU’s green roof and the Puget Sound. Expertly built by Lockhart|Suver and Cooks Welding Services.

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘄𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲: the decking is a 2x4 turned on its 2” edge to echo the 2” siding on the DADU below, so in many places a single line seems to run across the deck and down the wall. 🤯 📐

Lunawood is a Finnish thermally modified wood, made with only heat and steam and no chemicals, so it’s a material you can feel good about right where you lounge, dine, and soak.

A garage, a workshop, and a rental flat, all tucked beneath the backyard of a 1915 Tudor revival. 🌿

We’ve been waiting to share this one from our friends at SHED Architecture & Design , built by Lockhart|Suver

A steep corner lot became the opportunity, a green roof now covers the new structure, and the Lunawood ThermoWood siding was left unfinished on purpose, so it’ll weather and soften while the vines climb up. We love a building that gets more interesting with time.

Congrats to the whole team on such a beautiful project!

Turn over a box of crackers and you get a full ingredient list. Turn over a piece of drywall, insulation, or flooring, and you get nothing. Not because the information doesn’t matter, just because nobody’s required to give it to you here in the US.

Catherine Murphy [ Catherine Murphy Studio ], Education Director at Healthy Materials Lab, broke it down in this reel: Europe regulates that transparency. The US doesn’t, so it’s on architects and designers to do that digging themselves, usually one spec sheet at a time.

That’s exactly the gap Healthy Materials Lab’s courses exist to close, so building pros can make confident, healthier material choices without losing hours to research every single time.

We’ve admired this organization for some time. They’re a design research lab out of Parsons School of Design, built around the idea that health belongs at the center of every design decision, and we’re grateful for how much clarity they bring to a genuinely murky corner of this industry.
