One of the last things I do is run my hand along every edge.

Not because I am admiring my work. I am feeling for the tiny sharp spot, rough patch, or finish nib a camera will never show but your hand will find the first night you use it.

A custom table should look right from across the room and feel right when you live with it.

This is one of those quiet details that separates “done” from actually finished.

Chairs are sneaky.

A table gets all the attention, but one dining set can mean 8, 10, or 12 smaller furniture projects waiting beside it.

Every chair still has joints to check, parts to sand, edges to soften, finish to apply, and all those little corners that are apparently designed to hide from sandpaper.

The table may be the headline. The chairs are the fine print that takes half the week.

Have you ever noticed how much work is hiding in one chair?

People usually measure the dining room. Good start. But before we build a 10 foot table, we also need to know how it gets into the house.

Doorways, stairs, low ceilings, tight hallways, and basement corners can turn delivery day into a very expensive game of Tetris.

We plan for the final room and the route to it. A beautiful table does nobody much good if it spends eternity in the garage.

What is the tightest turn between your main door and dining room?

About a month ago we shared a little teaser of three massive bookmatched walnut slabs from the same tree.

Well... here’s what they became.

This table finished out at an impressive 10ft long, 60in wide at the ends and 52in through the center, paired with 12 Tuscany stools featuring walnut seats.

And because a top like this deserved something equally substantial underneath, we built the base from massive live edge walnut A frame legs.

Pretty hard not to stand back and stare at this one for a minute.

We had the opportunity to sit down with KELOLAND Living and share a little more about Sawdust & Splinters, how this all got started, family, and what we're building here in Sioux Falls. :)

Having our daughter Sophia join me for the interview made the whole experience even more special.

Tabletop thickness can completely change the personality of a dining table.

A more traditional top can feel refined and understated. A thick top adds visual weight and creates a much bolder presence in the room.

Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on the table size, base design, wood, and overall look you are trying to achieve.

Do you prefer a cleaner traditional profile or a thick, substantial tabletop?

The glamorous side of custom furniture building.

Measure. Cut. Glue. Sand. Sand again. Find one tiny scratch. Question every decision you have ever made. Sand again.

There are a lot of steps hiding behind a finished dining table, but each one contributes to how the final piece looks, feels, and holds up over time.

This is where the heirloom part actually happens.

This was a pretty fun surprise!

Jill with SiouxFalls.Business reached out after seeing one of our posts and asked if she could share the story behind Sawdust & Splinters, our family, and the move into our new shop.

Every day I’m grateful for the support that has allowed us to grow from our garage into this next chapter. Even more than that, I’m thankful that our family gets to build something meaningful together for other families in our community.

We’re just getting started. ;)

"We’re building a table with the intentions of it being passed down to generations.” Meet the family of woodworkers expanding from the garage to a new location.
