Slippery Rock VillageFest returns Saturday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., filling Main Street and Gateway Park with one of the town’s biggest days of the year.

More than 150 vendors are expected, with local food, handmade crafts, artwork, jewelry and plenty of things you probably didn’t plan on buying until you walked past the booth.

There will also be games, entertainment for the kids and live music throughout the day. It’s the kind of western Pennsylvania festival where you can show up hungry, wander around for a few hours and somehow leave carrying a bag of homemade something.

And yes, the town really is called Slippery Rock. That part usually starts a conversation all by itself.

VillageFest is also a good excuse to make a day out of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock University sits right in town, while nearby McConnells Mill State Park has the famous Slippery Rock Creek Gorge, an old gristmill, a covered bridge, waterfalls and some beautiful hiking country.

Moraine State Park and Lake Arthur are also nearby if you want to add some scenery to the trip. Come for the food and local vendors, stay for the music and small-town atmosphere, then take the long way home through one of the prettiest corners of western Pennsylvania.
