Based on my client’s love love of the western mountain landscape, this kitchen concept was all about transforming a basic builder-grade space into something layered, warm, and deeply personal.

From the earthy clay tones to the soft blue cabinetry and organic textures, every selection was meant to echo the richness and quiet beauty of the mountains.

And then, my recent trip to Sedona sealed it. Standing in that landscape, I had one of those “yes, this is exactly right” moments. The palette, the feeling, the intention were all aligned!

That’s the magic of thoughtful design – it doesn’t just look beautiful, it means something.

Traditional interiors are having a moment – and it’s easy to see why. There’s a renewed appreciation for spaces that feel familiar, layered, and rooted in nostalgia. Many are craving the feeling of simpler, more connected times. It feels especially at home in this early 20th-century Cary, NC residence.

We began by reimagining the mantel and fireplace surround, then layered in a palette of vibrant reds and blues – an elevated yet comfortable take on Americana. A Century sofa in Pindler denim (custom done in a narrow depth for a narrow room) keeps things approachable, while to***co leather, antique nickel nailheads, and touches of unlaquered brass add warmth and quiet polish.

Our client already had a strong foundation – custom drapery, a green chair, cream sofa, and wood side table. From there, we layered in warm neutral paint and a bold millwork color, along with an area rug, lighting (sconce, chandelier, and lamps), wall art, throw pillows, a coffee table, and accessories to make the room truly sing.

“How do you want to feel when you walk into the room at the end of our project together?”

It’s one of the very first questions I ask during a consultation.

For this lovely couple, the answer was simple:
Cozy. Inviting. Warm.
A place to enjoy entertaining.

At the time, the room’s awkward layout and worn furnishings meant it wasn’t a space they felt proud to share with guests.

Designing toward a feeling is one of my favorite parts of this work. At every stage of the project, I return to that goal to keep the design on track.

This living room was completely custom, built around a beloved rug and the palette from the client’s grey-and-brass kitchen. Denim blues, charcoal, warm gold, and brass create a contemporary coastal look while honoring the home’s historic character.

When I walked in after the install, the space felt exactly as she had hoped.

And those are the moments that make this work such a joy!

🍋 Airbnb fun! With the goal of increasing bookings for this modest lake condo, we set out to make the interiors a destination of their own.

The budget was limited, so we relied on cosmetic updates – paint, flooring, backsplash, lighting, and modest appliances – to create three possible looks for the small kitchen.

(We would never normally make the fridge a focal point, but alas, the footprint must remain unchanged. That said, we do enjoy the challenge of making lemonade from lemons!)

For ten years, our client worked three days a week at the dining room table — clearing papers each night (or meaning to).

Finally, he stopped pretending it was a dining room… and claimed it as his office.

We wrapped the room in historic Morris & Co. wallpaper, reversed the deep teal to ground the wainscoting and ceiling, layered in whiskey-toned leather chairs, a charcoal executive desk, and meaningful personal pieces.

Now it feels less like a compromise — and more like an English library with purpose.
