If you are like me, the temptation to buy those gorgeous fall mums sooner than later is real! But....if you want them to last until November, you might want to hold off just a bit longer. This is part of the reason that we don't start our fall installs until mid-September.

The mums are already out at Home Depot and every big box store across the country and every year I watch people load them into their carts and every year those same people end up disappointed before fall even gets going. I used to be one of those people. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out what experienced gardeners already know about buying mums — there is a right way and a wrong way to do it, and the garden centers are counting on most people not knowing the difference.
