Hey friends, I think itās time we have a chat about AI art and graphics, because they are EVERYWHERE. I know youāve been seeing it tooā¦ and honestly it looks bad.
Iāve been receiving a lot of AI designs from people looking for custom requests recently. More and more people are becoming reluctant to purchase art online or in-person as they canāt tell whatās AI or human made anymoreš. Many are using it to make product art, social media posts, event or market flyers, and beyond.
Letās talk why itās bad and what alternatives exist:
āļøIP and Copyright: AI is trained by scraping billions of images and art from the internet, without artist consent or compensation.
āļøMimicking Artist style: Each artist has a unique style that they have developed over years of practice and training. AI can replicate this and create fake work in the artistās same style. Resulting in work being created and sold under the guise of being made by the original artist.
āļøLacks Emotion: AI art lacks the proper elements of art, as it gives you a literal image based on your description. Thatās why it always looks off, or things out of place. It lacks the emotion, lived experiences, and human intent that is at the foundation of art.
So when you ask AI to make you a graphic or image, even for personal use, itās using existing art and images to make your request. Itās even worse when you upload the art image with your prompt directly to make something āsimilarā, as you single handedly just trained AI to steal that artistās style, not cool!
Every time you ask AI something, it requires immense resources. Each additional prompt to keep editing the image or response it generated, requires even more power and water. This is causing a rapid surge in electricity bills and CO2 emissions (causes climate change), and straining our water supply.
What you can do: Go back to how things were pre-AI and use free design apps like Canva. If you have artists selling items in your shop, coordinate with them to see if they could help you make a design and work out an agreement. Engage with your community, thereās always local school students in art and design, or artists, looking to boost their portfolio and could help make a flyer or event graphic, thatās a true win-win.
