IN PRACTICE | The Pantry That Didn’t Exist

The floor plan for this new home had a generous kitchen and a large laundry room—but no real pantry.

For these clients, that mattered.

They lived on an island accessed by private ferry, which meant grocery shopping wasn’t something they could do quickly or frequently. They needed room to keep extra pantry staples and the everyday “safety stock” that made sense for the way they lived.

When I reviewed the plans, I saw an opportunity.

Rather than adding square footage, I took a small portion of the oversized laundry room and used it to create pantry storage accessed directly from the kitchen.

A relatively small change to the plan.

A meaningful change to how the house would function every day.

That’s why I look beyond whether a floor plan technically works.

The question is whether it works for the people who will actually live there.

Why does a room feel off even when everything matches?

Because matching isn’t the same as creating connection.

A room can have the same colors, finishes and coordinating pieces and still feel flat. What often makes it work is variation within that connection.

A repeated wood tone — but not necessarily the same wood.
A color that appears again in a different proportion.
A mix of smooth and textured surfaces.
Something old beside something new.
Different shapes, heights and visual weights.

Cohesion gives the eye connections to follow. Contrast gives it something to notice.

The goal isn’t to make everything match.

It’s to make everything feel like it belongs.

Repetition is one of the quiet ways a room begins to feel connected.

A wood tone appears in one place, then again somewhere else.
A metal finish repeats.
A color or texture quietly returns.

Not enough to feel matched.
Just enough to create a visual relationship.

The eye recognizes that repetition, even when we aren’t consciously looking for it.

That’s what helps separate a room filled with beautiful things from a room that feels intentionally composed.

Connection, not matching.

Before I look at style, I look at space.

How will people move through the room?
Where does the furniture naturally belong?
What needs breathing room?
What should the room connect to?

These are the decisions that shape how a room actually works — before finishes, furnishings, or styling enter the conversation.

Good rooms don’t begin with furniture. They begin with understanding the space.

Things I noticed along the way.

A shadow. A piece of old hardware. The geometry of a floor. The contrast between something weathered and something precise.

Design inspiration doesn’t always come from looking for it. Sometimes it’s simply paying attention to what makes you stop.

Matching isn’t the goal.

A well-designed space doesn’t come from choosing the same wood, the same finish, or pieces from the same collection. It comes from creating connections — through proportion, texture, tone, material and repetition.

That’s what allows old and new, refined and rustic, light and dark to live together and still feel intentional.

The goal isn’t for everything to match.
It’s for everything to belong.

Before I look at anything pretty, I look at the plan.

Before finishes, furniture, or color, I want to understand how the space actually works. How do you move through it? Where are the natural sightlines? Do the rooms connect in a way that makes sense for everyday life?

Because a beautiful space that doesn’t function well is still a missed opportunity.

Some of the most important design decisions happen long before anything is selected.

Not every wall needs something on it.

Sometimes the decision to leave a surface open is what gives everything around it more presence. It creates breathing room, allows the architecture to speak, and gives the eye a place to rest.

An empty wall isn’t always unfinished. Sometimes, it’s intentional.

Good design considers what stays — and what doesn’t.

Why does lighting change everything?

Because lighting shapes how we experience a space emotionally — not just visually.

The same room can feel:
warm or cold,
inviting or stark,
calm or overstimulating,
simply based on how light is layered throughout it.

The most comfortable spaces usually combine multiple sources of light:
lamps,
natural light,
soft ambient glow,
and intentional shadows.

Good lighting creates depth, softness, rhythm, and atmosphere.

It’s often the difference between a room that simply looks finished and one that actually feels good to be in.

The best design decisions support how you move, gather, work, rest, and live—often in ways you don’t consciously notice.
