The Cottage to Condo is looking a little less cottage these days. 😄

The exterior is coming together, and I’m finally at the stage where the bigger changes are giving way to all those little details that make the idea actually work.

Including the garage door.

I found what I *think* might work as tracks for it, which means there is a very real possibility this little garage will have a functioning door.

Will it work exactly the way I have it pictured in my head?

I think so.

But considering this is the same house that introduced me to an unreasonable number of hidden brad nails and nearly caught fire during demolition, I’m not making any promises just yet. 😂

For now, I’m calling this progress.

The Lawbre has lights.

Well… mostly.

Every room now has its lighting installed, although not every light is actually connected yet. But after spending so much time running wire and thinking about what would go where, simply seeing the fixtures in place makes the rooms feel completely different.

And, of course, I’ve started bringing in furniture. Not decorating. Not yet. Right now I’m staging—trying pieces, testing scale, moving things from one wall to another, and figuring out how each room wants to work. Sometimes I can stare at an empty room forever and still not quite see it. Put a table and a couple of chairs inside, and suddenly the proportions start making sense.

This is one of my favorite stages of a house. The construction work isn’t finished. The rooms are nowhere near finished. Most of what you see here will probably move at least three more times. 😄

But for the first time, I’m not just looking at rooms. I’m starting to see the house.

And just like that, another house has found its person.

A few days ago, I shared the story of the remarkable miniature house created by Marlene and Leo Echaniz—the rooms, the tiny details, and the years of care that went into creating it. So many of you stopped to look closely at their work.

And Debra did more than look, she took it home.

There’s something especially meaningful about seeing a house like this begin another chapter. Marlene and Leo created it, cared for it, and filled it with their craftsmanship. Now Debra gets to be its next caretaker—and the story gets to keep going.

This is one of my favorite parts of what I do.

Not simply finding old houses but finding the people who will carry them forward. Welcome home, Debra. And welcome home to a very special little house.

Some houses arrive at Maple & Moss ready for a new story.

This one arrived carrying one with it.

Its owner’s great-grandfather built this dollhouse for her, and now she has entrusted it to me for the next part of its life.

There’s work to do. The electrical needs to be redone, the exterior needs a refresh, and the interior will be completely reimagined.

But this restoration isn’t about erasing what came before. It’s about giving a much-loved family house another life while honoring the reason it has been kept all these years.

And this time, it’s becoming something especially fun:

A Christmas house.

A house built by her great-grandfather, preserved by his great-granddaughter, and now getting ready for Christmas.

I think this one is going to be pretty special.

Sometimes the hardest part of designing a house is seeing past what’s already there.

I learned that with Victoria’s Farmhouse.

When it arrived, every room was filled with color—bright, bold, and completely different from the next. There was nothing wrong with it, but every time I looked inside, all I could see were someone else’s choices.

I couldn’t find mine.

So I stopped trying to choose a palette and did the opposite. I took one away. I white-boxed the entire interior until every room was blank. And almost immediately, I could see the house differently. Without all that visual noise, the rooms had space to become something else.

I think that’s part of why I’m drawn to shells like the Lawbre. There’s something freeing about beginning without a palette or a finished vision. You can spend a little time with the rooms before deciding what they need to become.

Sometimes you don’t need to make another choice. What you need isto take a few away and let the house breathe.

The Lawbre is starting to feel like a completely different house.

The exterior color and trim are finally where I want them, and I’ve been working my way through the windows and dormer pieces—slow work, but the kind that makes such a difference once everything starts coming back together.

With a little help from my husband, the house also has a new rotating base, which is going to make working on this very large house considerably easier. 😄

And then there’s the porch.

I wanted the look of slate, so naturally I made it out of… paper.

And I LOVE it.

Behind the scenes, all of the electrical wire has been run too, which means I’m getting very close to turning my attention to the inside.

There’s still plenty to do, but this is the stage I love—when the big decisions have been made and all those smaller details start changing the way you see the house.

The Lawbre is finding its way.
