She raised three children, photographed plants in her backyard, and produced images that European modernists recognized as masterpieces before most Americans knew her name.

Imogen Cunningham spent 75 years behind a camera — from Pictorialism in 1901 to her final portrait project completed in the year of her death at 93. She co-founded Group f/64 alongside Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. She photographed Frida Kahlo before Kahlo was famous. She reversed a centuries-old power dynamic in art by photographing her husband n**e in 1915 — the first time a female photographer applied that kind of formal attention to the male body.

Ansel Adams said her blood was "three percent acetic acid." She responded by mailing him a ma*****na plant in a Hills Brothers coffee tin.
