🌾 “How Do You Make Money Doing This?” 🌾

We get asked that question a lot and the honest answer is: we really don’t. At best, we break even.

But the value of this lifestyle goes far beyond dollars. Raising our own healthy meat, teaching our children where their food comes from, showing them the importance of hard work, and living in rhythm with the seasons and that’s priceless.

We may not be rich in money, but we are abundantly rich in family, experience, and purpose. And that’s what Houg Homesteading is all about.

🐟 Goldfish in Stock Tanks: Small Fish, Big Benefits! 🐟

Thinking of adding goldfish to your stock tank? Here's why it's a smart move:

✅ Natural Algae Control – Goldfish love snacking on algae, helping keep your water cleaner without harsh chemicals.

✅ Mosquito Prevention – They eat mosquito larvae, reducing pest problems around your tank.

✅ Low Maintenance – Hardy and adaptable, goldfish thrive in outdoor tanks with minimal care.

✅ Water Quality Boost – Their movement helps aerate the water, supporting a healthier environment for livestock.

✅ Fun & Relaxing to Watch – Bonus: they bring a bit of charm and peace to your farm setup!

👉 Tip: Don’t overcrowd—2-3 goldfish per 100 gallons is ideal. Avoid mixing with aggressive fish.

Broody Hen on the Homestead? Here's What to Know 🐔

A broody hen is one that’s decided it's time to hatch chicks—even if there's no rooster in sight! She’ll sit stubbornly on her nest all day, fluff up her feathers, growl or peck when disturbed, and stop laying eggs.

Since we don’t have a rooster, we don’t want our hens wasting time and energy trying to hatch infertile eggs. To break the broody cycle, we use separation. We move her to a well-ventilated space with no cozy nesting area for a few days. It’s not punishment! This is just to help her cool off and reset her hormones.

Signs of a broody hen:

Refusing to leave the nest, even at night

Fluffed-up feathers and defensive behavior

Clucking or growling when approached

Not laying eggs

Once broken of broodiness, she'll usually return to laying within a week or so.

Got a broody hen? Time to step in and give her a break! 🐣

Why I Scrub Stock Tanks on Sundays (Yep, Every Week!) yes I know it's Thursday😂 needs extra attention this week.

In the summer, Sundays are for scrubbing! I clean and refill the stock tanks and chicken waterers once a week to keep the water fresh and clear. Warm weather = algae and gunk if I don’t stay on top of it—and nobody wants to drink that, especially not my animals.

Winter’s a little different. I refill the tanks every day to make sure the water heater stays covered. It might seem like a lot, but it helps prevent fires (yikes!) and keeps everyone safe and hydrated.

It’s all part of the rhythm of farm life—clean water, happy animals, and a little extra peace of mind.

We recently had the chance to age a massive pine on the property—and this time, we did it using an increment borer. The result? This old giant is approximately 125 years old!

Here’s how the process works:

Use an increment borer, a specialized tool that lets you extract a small core from the tree without causing long-term damage.

Carefully drill into the trunk at breast height (about 4.5 feet up) until you reach the center.

Remove the core sample and count the growth rings. Each ring represents one year of growth.

This method gives you a precise count of the rings, and it’s a great tool for sustainable forestry, land management, or just satisfying your curiosity about the trees around you.

Our pine has been standing tall for well over a century. If trees could speak, I wonder what stories it could tell.

Have you aged any trees on your land? We'd love to hear about it!

We were lucky to have my Dad , former senior scientist at UW Madison and Uncle Roger, professor at Nicolet College, help us out. Trees are their favorite🌳
