Stuffed with Character

A slightly belated Friday IDE-day - with a look at my take on Rise, the ZGI for last April's Artemis II mission! I'm sharing this now, as I made this figure as a surprise birthday gift for a friend who's a fellow space nerd (Hi, Adrian!)

Inspiration - the Zero Gravity Indicator (ZGI) is a small soft object carried on manned space missions to provide a visual indicator that the vehicle has entered microgravity. For the Artemis II mission, a contest was held to select the design, and Rise - created by third grader Lucas Ye - was selected. Lucas was inspired by the iconic Earthrise photo taken by Bill Anders during the Apollo 8 mission.

Design - I created the design back in April, sticking with my usual 2-dimensional design, and changed the eye color from black to outlined white, but otherwise tried to stay true to the original look of Rise.

Ex*****on - I included a piece of stiffened felt inside the embroidered bill of Rise's cap, and like the original, I included an astronaut's footprint on the back side of my figure. Really pleased with my Rise's expression and how the ballcap turned out!

For today's edition of Friday IDE day - I'm sharing my latest commission!
Inspiration: The Grand Duke of Owls from the animated film Rock-A-Doodle
Design - I wanted to capture the details of his face in particular, as well as the weighty feel of his body.
Ex*****on: He didn't turn out quite as menacing as in my drawing, unfortunately, but his wings are posable thanks to wires sewn inside and the straws in his legs let him lean up against a wall.

With Spooky Season just around the corner, this Friday IDE-day I'm spotlighting horror hosts.
Inspiration: The legendary Elvira, Chicagoland's Svengoolie and Indiana's Sammy Terry
Design: I worked to keep the iconic elements of each character while adapting their look to my style.
Ex*****on: I'm pleased with the way all three came out - both Svengoolie's and Sammy's makeup and Elvira's generous ... beehive (what did you think I was going to say?)

I do have two commissions open for October - these figures (as well as most of my other designs) are $35 each or two for $60, which includes US shipping. Custom design requests (the Sven Squad or your local horror host, perhaps?) start at $40.

it’s not easy.
it’s freaking hard.

it’s the cost of supplies.

we can’t compete with big box stores.
we can’t compete with mass produced trash.

what we can do, is our best.
we can keep going.
we can keep showing up.
we can hope for the best.
