Zone J is taking shape—one step, one brick, and one planting at a time.

What began as an uneven raised bed on a slope has now become a purposeful front-yard garden designed for beauty, food, and year-round growth.

We lowered and reshaped the wall to work with the hill, created a balanced entrance with matching pavers, amended the soil with Black Kow and mushroom compost, added mulch for moisture retention, and began planting evergreen shrubs, companion flowers, basil, and stonecrop around the callaloo already thriving in the center.

This is the Slow Grind in action: not rushing the process, but building carefully, learning through each stage, and allowing the vision to grow with the garden.

Next: solar lighting, final entrance details, and a rainwater collection and drip-distribution system.

“Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.” — Psalm 126:5

Nothing brings people together like a pot of homemade collard greens prepared with love. Today Simone is preparing one of our family’s favorite meals, reminding us that some of life’s greatest blessings are found around the table.

Listen to her testimony, enjoy the journey, and be encouraged. Every meal tells a story, and every story gives God the glory.

Scripture

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.” — Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

🌿 From the Garden to Your Soul 🌿

God’s creation provides more than food—it provides nourishment, gratitude, and a reminder of His faithful provision.

Today’s Slow Grind Multi-Layered Salad is filled with crisp greens, fresh cucumbers, sweet watermelon, juicy tomatoes, and wholesome ingredients that fuel both the body and the mind. Every bowl is a reminder that healthy living begins one choice at a time.

As I continue working, researching, and building, I’m thankful for the simple blessings that keep me going.

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:31

May every meal remind us that God is the ultimate Provider, and every harvest is another testimony of His goodness.

🌱 Eat fresh.
🍉 Live well.
❤️ Love deeply.
🙏 Give thanks.

🌱 SGHG Garden Progress Report – Phase 1 Continues! 💧🔨

Today was one of those days that reminded me that every successful project is built one connection at a time.

I made significant progress on the Phase 1 Municipal Water Backbone System, installing additional Schedule 40 PVC, connecting more irrigation lines, testing the system, and preparing the garden for the next phase of expansion.

Along the way, I learned two valuable lessons:

💡 Lesson #1: You can’t use a splitter on a smart irrigation timer. Doing so dramatically reduces water pressure and affects the performance of the entire system. Each timer really needs its own dedicated water supply.

💡 Lesson #2: No matter how well you plan a PVC project, you will always need one more fitting! Elbows, couplings, adapters, reducers—you can never have enough pieces when building an irrigation system.

One of the things I’m most excited about is that every PVC connection installed today is preparing the foundation for Phase 2—the rainwater harvesting system. Soon, the gutters, rain barrel, check valve, and pump will tie directly into the irrigation backbone, creating a more sustainable watering system for the garden.

A special thank you to Kent in the HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Department at The Home Depot in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Kent has been incredibly helpful throughout this project, helping me think through the plumbing and irrigation design. His practical advice has saved me countless hours, and when I eventually write the SGHG Garden book, he’ll definitely deserve a place in the acknowledgments.

This garden continues to teach me patience, problem-solving, and stewardship. Every challenge is another lesson, and every improvement brings us one step closer to a fully integrated garden that grows food while conserving water.

Growing with purpose. Building for the future.
