Recently I began this 24 X 36 inch oil of a popular beach setting of Shalda Creek at Sleeping Bear National Park. It looked like a confusing mess to me. But now it’s beginning to take some form. How about for you?

"Anchored at Macatawa"

When I first began working in watercolors in the 90s, painting scenes of boats moored on Lake Macatawa was a favorite subject. It was a captivating subject for a young man from Ohio, seldom around water. I especially appreciated these scenes with the quiet calming evening light.

Such wonderful words. As an artist I experienced a moment that so spoke to me that I felt a longing to paint it. I put my heart into expressing the moment and so grateful when someone’s heart is receptive to what I shared. I feel like the gallery is a match maker. 😊

Pink Hydrangeas, Saugatuck

I never know when the beauty that surrounds us will say,”paint me”. Such was the story with these Hydrangeas. Ann and I were setting on a bench waiting for our turn in a restaurant. At the moment, this was my food. It wasn’t the beauty of the flowers alone, but the setting, with graceful curve of the roof line and the curiosity of the window reflections. Certainly those Hydrangeas are in bloom today. Can you experience the moment?

No, the photo isn’t upside down.
"drastic times call for drastic measures"
Sometimes it is falsely presumed a painting effortlessly flows. After having an artist friend over to discuss what wasn’t right for me in this painting, he quickly saw things. I was in agreement. I had looked at it too long trying to recognize what didn’t feel right.

The classic solution on an elementary level is to turn it upside down. “What?!”, you may ask. Yes. It aids in seeing abstractly. Seeing it for shapes, values and colors opposed to clouds and sky. Painting the clouds can be 90% there, but not have the feeling of the moment it was experienced.

For me, the heart of a painting is to do my best to express the beauty of what God created. Even if it means painting it upside down.
