Heywood-Wakefield Company Heywood-Wakefield is a legacy home furnishings company specializing in mid-century modern solid wood furniture.

Heywood-Wakefield has been producing furniture of exceptionally high quality and innovative design since 1897. Today's incarnation remains true to the original company's mid-century modern style and tradition of hand crafting. All furniture is solid wood, created from high-grade Northern Yellow Birch lumber sourced from sustainable US tree farms, and made in America. We also offer customization of

models from our current line, a wide fabric selection for upholstered pieces, and an extensive collection of mid-century modern-inspired area rugs. Heywood-Wakefield proudly continues to craft some of the most recognizable, beloved, and sought-after home furnishings from the mid-century modern period. Our classic designs and values, with their emphasis on durability, elegant simplicity, and a natural look, blend perfectly with contemporary tastes and décor needs.

Well, this is cool.

Last year, the game development studio Above The Desk reached out to us with the idea of including Heywood-Wakefield furniture in Above the Snow, their resource management game set in a 1960's Alpine lodge.

We aren't gamers but we loved the idea of our designs appearing in this new format and reaching a new generation of folks. They did a great job capturing the shapes of some of our favorite Mid-Century pieces.

Indie game publisher Wandering Wizard released it today. Check out Above the Snow on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2423760/Above_the_Snow/).

Eight fun questions about his work as a designer for Heywood-Wakefield.

Heywood-Wakefield was once one of America's largest furniture companies, employing thousands of craftspeople across eight factories. The Gardner, MA factory was almost a quarter mile long and used a million feet of lumber each month.

Since we restarted the company in 1992, we've been a much smaller operation. Instead of building in batches of hundreds, we make every piece to order in our Winchendon, MA shop.

This allows us to really flex our craftsmanship, choosing the wood one board at a time and deeply investing ourselves in the details of the construction. In fact, every piece we build is personally finished by our co-owner, Tom Belletete, a 3rd-generation Massachusetts woodworker. Tom's 50+ years of experience shows in everything we make.

We exist today because we believe that Heywood-Wakefield's furniture is beautiful, eminently functional and deserves to be preserved as an important part of the history of American Modern design and New England woodcraft.

We know that this level of quality isn't cheap, so we're happy to run occasional sales to make our furniture a bit more accessible. Until the end of February, we're offering up to 25% off our Living Room Collection, home to some of our favorite designs.

Last week, a customer shared a wonderful little story with us:

"I ate at this table every Sunday as a kid and now my husband and children and I gather around it every night. It's just as beautiful and works just as well as when my grandparents first bought it."

At Heywood-Wakefield, we make furniture that lasts generations in a style that always feels cool and approachable. Every piece is made with care in Massachusetts and ready to be treasured, shared and maybe passed on.

We're kicking off the new year with a collection-wide sale.

Introducing the Walnut Collection. To celebrate our bicentennial, we’re doing something new; offering three of our favorite living room tables in American Black Walnut.

It’s a nod to some of the mid-century masters who worked extensively in walnut (Hans Wegner, Paul McCobb, Finn Juhl) but also an expression of our desire to try new things and continue redefining what Heywood-Wakefield means as we enter our third century of building furniture.

Available for discounted pre-order through Feb 6th.

In this 1949 photo, a finisher at the old Gardner, MA factory rubs an M 321 bookcase mounted to the conveyor that moved components over 3/4's of a mile through the different departments (traveling at 14 feet per minute).

We still make the M 321. Its details are subtle (the smooth corners, the feet, the small wrap-arounds of the shelves) which lets the grain and color of the wood take the focus.
