We've not changed a ton in regards to actual layout of the kitchen, but the function is much more efficient AND it's going to look much more current ;-)

As we head into the holiday season, if you're considering a future kitchen remodel, now is the time to pay attention to how you're using the space.

Are you running all over the kitchen because things aren't where they should be?

Do you have 20 spatulas in the drawer and you actually only use 2?

Do you have counterspace that you need for the annual cookie baking or are you always struggling for workspace?

Are you constantly pulling out the step stool to get to things in cabinets that you need more accessibility to?

Is your pantry too deep to even functionally use the space in it? Are you able to get to the back of the shelves without removing all the stuff up front?

How much time does it take to plan a kitchen remodel - I'd say to give yourself at least 3 months for design intent, final drawings and bids. Then, it depends on the contractors availability before the cabinets arrive. Then it's demo which means NO kitchen for a period of time while the prep happens - the electrical, plumbing and all the fun stuff behind the walls. Then the cabinets finally arrive and there's still more work to be done... eventually its close but you're waiting on the countertops to arrive and the final appliances to be installed. It's a long process but SO worth it!

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

So many of our lives have been touched by someone who has had breast cancer. I usually refrain from speaking about stuff like this but as women it's so important we prioritize our self-care. So many women put others needs first and leave our needs for later.

Sometimes it's easier to see the "real" completion photos. The ones with the clothes in there as the space is ACTUALLY being lived in and used, rather than these photos showing the empty shelves. Day to day, the spaces need to FUNCTION while looking nice and pulled together. It's unrealistic to expect perfectly color coded, organized minimal closets. Here's the REAL before and after. The lived-in space, not the pretty one we staged for photos.

This is what I'm seeing more and more of these days.

Need a new paint color? Obviously, it's not just as easy as picking anything off the paint desk, because you need to confirm how the color works with all the other things in the room.

Sometimes we need to be flexible in the design and make adjustments on the fly due to material delays, pricing and contractor availability.

In the end, it always works out.

Bathroom remodel in Phase 1 for this client came SO FAST. We just got the pricing back and I came back to review the scope with the contractor and the bathroom was gutted to the studs. Surprise, they found an old, abandoned bees nest in the wall along with some mold.

Having people in your home during a remodel is stressful enough, it's even more stressful when you find unexpected damage. The good thing is this wont be a band-aid fix. It's going to be totally new, fresh and cleaned up for this busy family!

I shared about this project on my personal page a little bit ago, but WOW this place has been transformed.

This client came to me after her husband was diagnosed with ALS. The same disease that took my Dad at 62.

I learned a lot when helping remodel his bathroom and was able to apply not only what I learned in design school but what I learned from talking with the many wonderful people at the Cleveland ALS Association and then what I learned from watching my dad's progression.

This project has brought back many memories, most not good ones, but I'm so grateful I could help this family create a beautiful, functional bathroom.

Final photos are still to come but these progress photos show a lot. The before photos are so confusing as we totally changed things up. The new door into the bathroom is where the bar is in the first photo. The existing/previous half-bathroom was behind this bar.
