Being a mother is often a life long journey that a woman embarks on. The road has many curves, off the beaten tracks, and sometimes unexpected detours. Mothers often struggle, sacrifice, and worry about their children. But we try to be their number one cheerleader and confidant. And then we have the day to be celebrated, May 10th, Mothers Day! Then the question is asked, “What do you want for Mothers Day?” Most of the time we can’t give them a definite answer so they have to figure it out on their own. April Showers bring May flowers!
Even though we are currently in a drought in the South, we sill have hope for sitting on our rockers on the front porch and watch some beautiful rain fall. Hearing the raindrops on the metal roof can be so peaceful and lull you to sleep. Picked up more flower plants to put in the ground tomorrow, so feeling very hopeful.
My feature today is this vintage umbrella decorated with lace and ribbons. It reminds me of the movie, A Little Bit of Heaven. The joyous wake Kate Hudson’s character had and her dancing with a parasol. Do you remember that scene in the moving? My own wedding 3 years ago was postponed as a hurricane hit that week. But, I was definitely ready with this umbrella in case it rained on the new date. For fun, I had AI put me under my own polka dotted bubble umbrella with rain. I love my umbrella!
Theme today is rain, gardens, gardening, and flowers. Let’s also add in hummingbirds and butterflies.

Let’s talk about La Solana Pottery.
Operated from late 1940’s until 1982 making items for the kitchen, called Solana Ware. Most were not purchased for money in stores. They were used as a promotional items for store. Collect loyalty stamps based on purchases and redeem them for an item. My first set given to me 40 years included the unfinished stamp sheet for a local drugstore. I threw it away because I didn’t know any better.
I love their items. The glaze is a soft matte: soothing colors and such a tranquil feeling when you rub your hands on the glaze.
The first photo is a bean pot, most use it as a canister. The pitcher reflects the mid century modern design and it appeals to collectors. Colors came in green, yellow, pink, and turquoise. Rarely marked as I only had one item that was incised with their name on the bottom. Some may be found with the original sticker. Pans were also made, I never used them as I found they were too heavy for me.

Oh, how the dynamics of the family breakfast have changed through the decades. Toss the kids a pop-tart while the parents pick up coffee, pastry, or bacon & egg biscuit on their commute to work. But when the weekend hits, it’s time for the best breakfast or brunch ever! Bring out the bacon, sausage, eggs, and the ever loving grits in the South. Don’t forget the fluffy pancakes!
Over 100 years ago, breakfast was served in a classy style within the home. Early American pattern glass companies, aka EAPG, produced beautiful syrup/molasses pitchers. On their table would be the matching sugar, creamers, milk pitchers, etc. Even the worst pancake maker could heighten the deliciousness of her pancakes when the syrup was poured from such an elegant glass.
The first piece of EAPG glass I came across totally amazed me. To think that a utilitarian glass dish, made over a century ago, and used sooo many times still survived through the years. First photo shows one made by Fostoria in their Virginia pattern of 1888. Second one is Adams & Co from 1879. Aren’t they gorgeous? As several decades passed, Log Cabin came out with their iconic starburst design, a favorite for those who love the Mid Century Modern and live it today. So on your table during your weekend breakfast celebration, don’t just pour straight from the bottle. Use a syrup pitcher that will help sweeten your syrup, whether poured on pancakes or in a bowl for dipping biscuits.

Children everywhere are eating their Easter eggs and candy. Soon it will be time to put their baskets away. My collection of baskets are made of glass! The 3 here are antique from around 1900. Made in Eastern Europe by the Bohemian glass maker, Welz. I love the handles with thorns and the peppermint stripe.
Sometimes a basket tells a story, either real or imagined. I imagine the lone basket was a treasured item of an immigrant from Europe. She protected it as they made the trip across the Atlantic. Proudly displayed in her home upon arrival. But…it dropped and part of it shattered in tiny pieces. She wept. While she slept, her husband gathered mud from the river and lovingly repaired it. It eventually ended up in South Georgia and was passed to the care of her children. My sweet friend, Sylvia, had it up for sale with The Empty Nest. The fact that a repair was made gave it a special meaning as it claims a front row position in one of my china cabinets.
Now, I don’t yet have any of my antique glass baskets up for sale, but I do have 3 vintage glass baskets, in comments, listed for sale, blown in a mold, from the American Fenton Art Glass Company. Glass baskets remain a beautiful accent to any interior.

Spring is here and roses are blooming!

I have collected rose bowls for many years. These were originally made for short stemmed roses grown during the Victorian era. They were also used to hold potpourri made from dried rose petals to freshen the air of those homes. Glass companies continue to make the beloved rose bowls.

This is one of my favorite. It is called Shell & Seaweed with enameled painting (I love enameled decor on glass). Often, mistaken as being made by Phoenix-Consolidated Glass in America in the early 1900’s. Actually made by Harrach, a Bohemian glass company in the Czech Republic, founded in the early 1700’s. Factory line drawings of the early 1900’s support the Harrach origin. $65 plus shipping.
