Last night, the Generation Homes Northwest | New & Custom Home Builder team and I gathered alongside all of our talented colleagues to celebrate an exciting culmination to the 2026 GRO Parade of Homes — the awards ceremony 🥳

Our house, The Aurora, won the “2026 Industry Choice Award” 🏆 which is wildly flattering because it means that we received the most votes from the folks that know their stuff across all categories including: interior design, kitchen, curbside appeal, landscape, entertainment, innovation, and best in show ✨✨✨

I truly could not be more grateful for the opportunity to participate in the parade this year. To the clients who chose to trust me with their forever home, the build team that recognized the magic I could bring to the table, and all the friends and family that supported me tirelessly along the way, thank you 🫶❤️✨

Supppp? 👋

lol, but seriously, these design projects we do together are for the long haul. It’s not just me learning your aesthetic preferences or you experiencing design presentations (although, that is the really fun party 🤪). You’re probably going to hear about my kids and my mom and I’m probably going to know a lot more than anyone else knows about your morning rituals and bedtime routines 🙃

I like to say that I’m over here proving that “high design can be down to earth” because when relationships last this long, it feels really important to be able show up authentically through it all.

And as it goes from just me to the little team that I’m growing, we’re all getting cozy together. After all, infusing emotion is what makes a place truly feel special 🥰

Thank you Genny Moller for capturing the essence of the space through spectacular imagery and thank you to Shannon Quimby for supporting with photo styling and ensuring we didn’t have any pesky tangents 😜

And another big shoutout to my uber talented florist friends and Henbrook Flower Farm for the fabulous flowers 🤤

2026 was my first year participating in the Clark County Parade of Homes and I don’t think it will be my last 😉 I had so much fun being under the pressures of a tight timeline. Way better than lollygagging 😂

The unseen work of an interior designer 😘

As we enter into the final weekend of the 2026 GRO Parade of Homes, I’m a bit of a bundle of emotions 🥺❤️🙏

Just two years ago when I decided to create Emily Jean Interior Design and go all in on this work, Danielle Killian, the former Director of Events and Development at the BIA of Clark County was one of the first people to reach out to me and invite me to be part of this local builder community. In December of last year she suddenly and tragically passed away 💔

I will never not think of her when I participate in this event because she was so much of what made it a success and I truly believe that her light and energy continue to be present here. It almost feels like the Parade of Homes is a celebration of her life, in a way 🥹✨

I didn’t work with her every day or even talk to her more than a few times a year, but every time we connected I always felt seen, appreciated, and most importantly WELCOME in the room.

Tomorrow, Saturday 9/26 is Danielle’s birthday. In her honor, the parade is hosting a canned food drive supported by Clark Neighbors Food Project (Clark Neighbors Food Project), an initiative Danielle participated in with her team during her time at Leadership Clark County 🙏

I hope you get to come by and say hello during this final weekend of the Clark County Parade of Homes 🫶 I would love to see you!

Everyone and their mom (literally) is using AI to create photorealistic 3D renderings for their design projects. I’m here for it, but I also think we need to talk clearly about what AI can and cannot do, and where an interior designer fits in among all of this noise.

So let’s get into it 👇

There are seemingly a trillion AI rendering tools out there and all of them claim to be the best, but ChatGPT seems to be the most popular among my clients 😜

In just the past few months, nearly every client has come to me (before ever signing an agreement) with an AI rendering in hand that relays the vision they have in mind 👀

I actually don’t mind this one bit. I use AI the same way at times: for early concepting. Key word = EARLY 👈

There are a handful of things AI can’t do (like actually design a unique space), but today we’re sticking to one point: it can’t get the details right, and that can really mess you up when planning a room.

AI is notorious for shifting a window, resizing a sectional, and changing color tones just to make its output look nicer and more balanced (can you blame it though 🤷‍♀️).

When you rely on an image like this as your source of truth and the room doesn’t come together (the chair is too big, the table is too low) that’s because it’s AI.

Here’s my take: use it to get those early concepts out of your head and onto “paper.” Just don’t skip the designer (or the tape measurer 😅) before you commit to a room.

Years ago, I was living in Los Angeles running a trend forecasting company with a good friend for fashion companies. Today I am designing homes and can’t help but to consider trends while I’m at it.

Last week was a celebration and the end of an era 🥺🫶

Along with one other Portland-based student, I earned my final Masters Certificate of Interior Design from HSID 🎓

Less than two years ago, I decided to go back to school to refine my design skills and prepare to launch my own design firm. Because of this education, the connections that I developed through the program, and a lot of hard work and grit behind-the-scenes, I am very happy to report that I am, indeed, running a successful (and growing!), design firm 😭🙏💓

My intention is to never lose touch with this school. The HSID community is something so incredibly special. I’ll continue to show up for events and in support of future students as they develop their own skillsets and, who knows, maybe someday I’ll have the opportunity to teach 🤔 …

So here it is! Cheers to completing a very rigorous and rich program and earning this Masters Certificate in Interior Design! 🥂
