Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made with layers of filo dough filled with chopped nuts and drenched in a honey syrup. It is a popular dessert in the Middle East and Mediterranean region.
Here is a basic recipe for baklava:
Ingredients:
1 package phyllo dough, thawed
1 cup unsalted butter, melted
2 cups chopped nuts (pistachios, walnuts, or almonds)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup lemon juice
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
Prepare the nut mixture: Combine chopped nuts, cinnamon, and cloves in a bowl.
Prepare the syrup: In a saucepan, combine sugar, honey, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
Assemble the baklava: Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the prepared pan, brush with melted butter. Repeat with remaining phyllo dough, brushing each layer with butter.
Spread the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo layers.
Cut the baklava into desired shapes (diamonds, squares, or triangles).
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown.
Pour the cooled syrup over the baked baklava.
Let cool completely before serving.
Baklava is best served chilled. It can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
