Quick tip! Portable carpet cleaners, like the ones you can rent, often do a fair job. Although, if you are trying to get longevity out of your carpet it's not the answer. Portable units do not have the power to get the water back out of your carpet. This water is detrimental to your carpet over time. The water delaminates the glue on the backing of the carpet. This leaves loose carpet after just a couple years. People often call us asking for their carpet to be "re-stretched." This is difficult to do and ends up being expensive.
