A steep backyard doesn’t have to mean wasted space.

This property has an estimated 12-foot elevation change, making the goal of creating a usable outdoor space a little more complex than usual.

Before designing a solution, we need to map the elevations, locate the septic tank and leach field, identify the repair zone, and determine what the town will allow. These details will shape what can actually be built on the property.

Before anyone walks through the doors, they’ve already experienced the property.

We’re excited to be working with Multiply Church on the landscape design for two of their entryways.

The goal is more than simply making the entrances look beautiful. We’re creating a welcoming first impression that reflects the atmosphere of the church and gives people something beautiful to experience as they arrive.

I had a project on Lake Norman that could use glass railings. I love using them on a yard with a view!

This looks like a slope now. Give us a few months.

This project has a pretty significant grade change, but that’s exactly what makes the design interesting.

The elevated pool will sit above the rest of the space, with a pavilion nearby and a sunken fire pit area about 2.5 feet lower.

Instead of flattening the property and fighting the slope, we’re using the elevation to create distinct spaces and make the change in grade part of the experience.

Pool. Pavilion. Fire pit. Water.

It’s going to be one incredible backyard.

Most designers spend too much time trying to make their 3D renderings look better when the real problem is often the layout underneath them.

Before you start modeling, take the time to understand how the space will actually be used.

Think about movement. Think about function. Test your ideas on a scaled plan.

Then, once the major spatial decisions make sense, bring the design into 3D.

The goal isn't to figure out the design while you're rendering it.

The goal is to have a strong design before you ever open the 3D software.

A better layout makes every decision that comes after it easier.
