Your house has an October to-do list whether you write it down or not.

Hoses off and spigots drained. Gaps around penetrations sealed before mice find them. Furnace filter swapped. A walk around the foundation looking for grading that settled toward the house this year.

None of it takes long, and all of it is cheaper than the February version of the same problem. The full checklist is in the comments.

Can a genuinely small bathroom feel bigger without moving walls?

Yes, and it's mostly three moves. A vanity with legs or a floating one, so floor runs wall to wall visually. Glass instead of a curtain. And one large mirror doing double duty for light.

Small bathrooms punish clutter and reward restraint. The full bag of tricks, including the ones that cost almost nothing, is in the comments.

This porch is racing the calendar, and it's going to win.

Shell up and dried in during fall means insulation, heat, and finishes happen indoors over winter, and the room is ready when the first nice March weekend shows up. Start in spring instead and you lose the best months to the build itself.

Four season porches are the rare project where starting in cold weather is the smart sequence. More in the comments.

The 10 to 15 percent rule, and why we repeat it constantly:

Whatever your remodel budget is, hold 10 to 15 percent of it back as contingency. Not for upgrades. For the subfloor nobody knew was soft, the wiring that isn't to code, the surprise behind the wall.

If the project finishes clean, congratulations, you just funded the furniture. If it doesn't, you never had to stop work to find money. More prep that pays off in the comments.

Built in summer, earning its keep in October.

A stone-wrapped outdoor kitchen under a pergola stretches the season further than people expect. Cooking outside in a jacket beats not cooking outside at all, and the football Saturday crowd agrees.

If an outdoor kitchen is on the someday list, the planning guide in the comments is the place to start. Winter is when these get designed.

Not every kitchen upgrade earns its money back. The list of ones that do is shorter than the showroom suggests.

Layout fixes that end the traffic jam. Lighting in layers instead of one ceiling fixture. Storage that goes to the ceiling. Counters and appliances land further down the payback list than most people expect.

We ranked the ten that hold up in the post linked in the comments. Worth reading before any showroom visit.

What does it cost to build a house in Iowa? It's the most-searched question that brings people to our site.

In 2026 a new Central Iowa home runs about $150 to $250 per square foot before land, and our starting point is about $150. A 2,000 square foot house lands around $300,000 to $500,000 for the house alone, with the lot and site prep on top. Those are planning figures; your plans and finishes set the real number.

The full 2026 breakdown, including what Iowa's new radon law means for new homes, is in the comments.

Refinished treads, new balusters, same staircase. This was one line item inside a whole-house remodel.

Whole-house versus room-by-room is really a question about disruption. One big project means one season of chaos and trades that coordinate. Room by room spreads the cost but also spreads the dust over years.

There's a right answer for your situation, and the framework for finding it is in the comments.

The framing stage is when your basement's insulation decision gets locked in.

Fiberglass batts cost less but can't touch the concrete, or they'll wick moisture. Closed cell spray foam costs more and does two jobs at once: insulation and v***r barrier against the foundation wall.

In an Iowa basement, that second job is the one that matters. The comparison, with where each makes sense, is in the comments.

Dusk does this house a favor, but the daylight details are what make it work.

Deep overhangs that shade the summer sun. A covered deck that turns the back into three-season space. Windows sized for the view instead of a catalog page.

New construction is a thousand decisions, and the good ones show up at the golden hour and the gas bill both.

Details at the link in the comments.
