🪵 A Building That Helped Build Westby ❤️

Before it was The Big Old Red Shed, this place was part of the lumber industry that helped build Westby, Wisconsin.

For more than a century, this property has been connected to the lumber business. The story begins with Evan T. Saugstad, who entered the lumber business in Westby in 1881. In 1899, he purchased Miner Brothers Lumber. Around 1918, the operation became Coleman Lumber, and in 1927, Taylor Lumber Company took over.

Taylor Lumber became a major part of Westby’s history, operating for more than 50 years. In 1930, when a devastating tornado tore through Westby, Taylor’s large lumber shed was damaged.

Eventually, the lumber operation became part of the Nuzum Lumber story, continuing the incredible connection between this place and the materials that helped build homes, businesses and the community around it.

And while you’re here, think about the history that happened right here.

The back two antique booths you walk through today. Those were once coal bins. 🪨

And if you make your way all the way to the very back corner, look down at the old concrete. You can still find workers’ initials written into the cement. People who worked here generations ago.

Think about that.

People actually stood where you’re standing.

They worked here. They hauled lumber. They handled coal. They built things. They left their initials in the concrete—and then they went home, never knowing that decades later people would still be walking through the same building looking at the marks they left behind.

That’s what makes The Big Old Red Shed special.

We’re not just an antique store.

You’re walking through a piece of Westby history.

Come explore the old lumberyard. Look at the beams, the old concrete, the coal bins and all those little details that can’t be recreated.
