After all these years I still get the same look from people when they ask what my job is actually like day to day.

It's less mood boards and more standing in unfinished rooms making calls most people never think about.

The obsessiveness is real. The stubbornness about getting it right is real too.

I wouldn't do this job any other way, and honestly I think my clients are better off for it. 🤍

Fourteen years of doing this in the Gorge teaches you pretty fast which decisions people regret skipping and which ones they never once second-guess.

None of them are trendy. None of them go out of style. They're just the stuff that makes a house work the way you actually live in it, year after year.

If you're building or renovating and trying to figure out where to spend versus where to save, this is usually where I tell people not to cut corners. 🤍

Goodbye, 1990s. wave

This kitchen needed a full reset. We removed the wall between the kitchen and dining space, and the whole layout opened up. What used to be dark and closed-off is now full of light, bright, airy, and finally connected to the rest of the home.

Bathroom before and afters coming soon.

The Panoramic Valley Mountain Home. Built from the ground up to do one thing really well, frame the Hood River Valley without getting in its way.

Concrete floors and tongue-and-groove ceilings keep things modern but still warm, not cold and sterile like concrete can read.

Grain-matched walnut cabinetry runs through the whole house, clean lines that don't compete with those views for attention.

This is new construction done right, where the architecture gets out of the way and lets the landscape do the talking.

What I've learned after 15 years of designing → some of these took a decade to figure out.

- Almost everything gets decided before demo starts. That's the part nobody sees, but it's the part that actually matters.
- The right client makes or breaks a project more than the right house ever does.
- I said no to a lot early on so I could get good at less.

A big part of my job now is just showing up on-site and speaking up when something's not right. That's quality control, not micromanaging.

15 years in, and the biggest lesson is still the simplest one: put your energy in early. A real plan is non-negotiable.

There's no such thing as a small change in design. Here's what I actually mean by it.

A countertop edge profile. The exact height of a light fixture over an island. Whether hardware is brushed or polished.

These get treated like finishing touches, something you pick last, something that doesn't matter much in the grand scheme. It's the opposite.

Those "small" decisions are usually load-bearing for how a whole room feels.

Nothing in a well-designed space exists on its own. Every choice is in conversation with the ones around it.

The Hood River Orchard Residence. A whole-home project, top to bottom.

Warm oak cabinets, everywhere.
Matte black fixtures tying every room together.
Slab marble that runs from the bathroom vanities straight into the kitchen backsplash.
A hood I'd design again in a heartbeat.
Skylights pulling light straight down onto the island.

Nothing in this house is a one-off decision. Every material talks to the next one. 🤍

My parents let me redesign our bathroom five separate times growing up.

New paint, new towels, a different shower curtain, a new light fixture, over and over, because I couldn't leave a room alone once I could see what it could be.

I thought for a while that meant I'd be an artist. Turns out it meant I'd spend my career caring way too much about details most people would never notice.

That's still true.

A room that gets it right in ten years matters more to me than one that photographs well today. I'd rather build something that holds up than something that trends.

That conviction started in a bathroom I redecorated as a kid, and it's the same one I bring to every project now. 🤍

Every site visit has a rhythm to it.

Walk the space, touch what's already installed, stand in the doorway and see what the client will actually see first.

It's less about a checklist and more about catching the small stuff early, before it's expensive or impossible to fix.

This is the part of the job that never makes it into a portfolio, and it's the part I'd never skip.
