The more conversations I have at markets, the more it reinforces that this work is really about memory and connection at least as much as geography.

People point out old neighborhoods, favorite hiking trails, streets they grew up on, parks where they spent summers, or places connected to someone they love. Everyone has a place that matters deeply to them.

This custom map was made as a graduation gift for someone’s daughter, which honestly feels like such a perfect example of why I keep coming back to place-based artwork. The places we return to over and over become part of who we are.

Still feeling really grateful after the Phipps May Market last weekend 💛 Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared stories about meaningful places, picked out artwork, or signed up to stay connected.

And as a little reintroduction, I’m Erin, the artist behind Squirrel Hill Design and Craft. I'm a third generation artist & cartographer. My work is handcrafted maps and place-based artwork inspired by the little details that make somewhere feel like home.

One of my favorite parts of doing this work is hearing how deeply people connect to places. Parks, neighborhoods, trails, childhood homes, hiking spots, wedding venues, everyone has somewhere that matters to them.

While everyone’s been focused on the draft, I collected up a few “draft pics” of my own. Some behind the scenes drafting new ideas and projects.

This one’s a new display system I’ve been building over the past few months. Pics of almost finished pieces, prototypes, and a lot of in-between versions

I got back into a woodshop for the first time in about 6 years to make it happen
Really satisfying, and also very humbling to be struggle at.
Even simple things like marking and measuring I had to relearn. It felt like a good reminder that being bad at something is just part of learning.

I also (finally) taught myself isometric drawing and basic 3D modeling to plan everything out.
Both things I’d been putting off for a long time because they felt intimidating, and it’s been really satisfying to push through that. I think doing it with a project I wasn’t getting paid for really helped.

I’m working on more intentional product displays and setups to make events a lot less chaotic. In person shows are so important to my works, but anyone who’s done one knows they are so intense and demanding to actually pull off.

These are just a small slice of what I’ve been working on lately, a little behind the scenes of one of my many hats as a one-person business 👷‍♀️

Tomorrow is VegFair!

I’m emerging from hibernation and I love this springtime event. I highly recommend coming by if you’ve got some time! There’s going to be lots of other local artists plus the most delicious vegan food. Pro tip: lines were -much- shorter at VegFair than VegFest last year, but food does sell out (we all have less space than at the outdoor show). So come by and get a little lunch tasting menu of vegan food from little local PGH businesses and check out all the new stuff I’m bringing! 🥕🥦🍪⛰️🌳

I’m also excited to share some behind the scenes of projects that I’ve been working on here. Look at my boy’s pirouette - I’m so proud 🥹. Plus a custom order I just finished with the proof and initial request from the client. New hot stuff baby today in person only at crafts & drafts valentines edition at in Larimer!
Come by for the limited launch of my new obsession - the original 1979 Pirate Parrot. Oh the lore and this sultry pose, restored and colorized, *chefs kiss* it’s my version of being a “sports” fan.

I’ll have a limited quantity of new greeting cards with waterproof stickers here from 12-4pm. Come by and get your wings on this beauty! 😍

One of my favorite and most loved stickers - and a timely reminder to the rules almost all PGHers can agree on for parking chairs.

I once saw (and have heard of a few times recently) someone shoveling snow onto a car that had moved their chair and taken the spot they dug out. Be kind and respect the chair, guys. Shoveling can be a real pain!

This weekend is your last chance to shop in person! I’ll be at Crafts and Drafts in Larimer on Saturday and Workshop’s Wilkinsburg Holiday market on Sunday.

⚠️ I have 4 puzzles left (as of 4pm Friday). You can order them straight from the online shop to guarantee you’ll get one, or stop by one of the events to snag any that are left.

⚠️ ALSO - Monday is the LAST day to place an online order and get it in time for Christmas.

So my partner and I bought our first house earlier this year. And we had to buy a fridge, which really made me feel like an adult. (Only adults own their own full size refrigerators)

The thing I love about the neighborhood sign series is this - seeing the sign on the fridge makes me think, oh yea we got our house in North Braddock this year 🥰. It could also be where you grew up, your first apartment, where you went to school or work.
