TOMORROW (Saturday Aug 1) is Veg Fest 2026 and I will be there!

It’s my first show since the disaster that was three rivers arts fest. I’m actually really anxious about this one because of that - even though I’ve done tons of outdoor events at this point, all the unknowns feel scary in a way that’s different even than when I was first doing them. I’d love if you come by and show some support. 🧡

Plus hi it’s vegfest aka the best event of the summer with so much delicious vegan food and all sorts of animals and artists and craftspeople!

I’ll even have a few rebuilt new pieces that didn’t get to debut at three rivers including a new laurel highlands print that’s just the start of something I’m really excited about. 🌲 🗺️ 🌲 👀

Just a quick little update - after the storm I’ve been doing a LOT of gardening and landscaping. And my zinnias just started to bloom 💛🤍🩷 it’s felt like something I can accomplish and be in control of and sometimes there’s a destructive element that feels cathartic. (Try weedwacking next time you’re stressed/upset, for real)

If you placed an order recently the first batch is going to the post office this morning. Day to day I’m just plugging away at storm recovery and orders plus all the admin/operations of running a business. 📦🎁

I recently took a CNC router class at Protohaven as part of a big project I’m working on and very excited about. It’s intimidating because it’s new so it’s taking a long time, but that one’s moving forward to.

And a quick plug for Protohaven - it’s seriously one of the best resources in town. Whether you’re an artist/craftsperson entrepreneur like myself or a hobbyist or you just want to learn something new. Come check it out! They do free tours plus classes that you can take even if you’re not a member yet. 🛠️ from blacksmithing to embroidery and all sorts of stuff in between!

Three Rivers Arts Festival never really happened for me this year.

After weeks of preparation and 11 hours setting up my booth, a severe storm tore through the Cultural District before the festival had even begun.

The wind moved my entire booth nearly 10 feet. Display walls collapsed. Inventory, signage, packaging, equipment, and fixtures were soaked or damaged. Every wood map that made it to the festival was destroyed.

The last few weeks have been spent documenting everything for insurance, cleaning, sorting, recounting inventory, and rebuilding after the storm.

I finally updated the website with what’s actually available.

If you’ve been meaning to order a map, puzzle, ornament, sticker, magnet, or gift, now would be a really meaningful time to do it.

Every purchase helps me continue creating handcrafted maps and helps this small Pittsburgh business get back on its feet.

Wood map orders may take a little longer than usual while I’m in recovery mode, but if you’re not in a rush, I’d be incredibly grateful for your patience and support.

Thank you to everyone who has checked in, helped sort inventory, sent kind words, or placed an order already. It means so much.

I’ll share more at a time when I’ve had the chance to process a bit more. But I will not be at the three rivers arts fest this weekend.
Yesterday a flash thunderstorm blew through and my booth was hit catastrophically. Utter devastation. I had to evacuate the tent and take shelter in a random building across the street.

I’ve spent the past day and a half sleeping, eating pizza, and crying about it. I’m very grateful that my family showed up immediately to help clear things out while I was in shock.

More than anything I’m grateful that no one was injured.

From what I’ve heard over 10 artists had their tents go down. Mine was weighed down with over 250lb of weight and the metal legs literally buckled and bent. There was a very poignant moment where I went from shocked at what was happening to fearful for my safety as I saw the tent lift and move.

All that is to say, I’m going to need a minute to regroup.

The new Allegheny County Puzzle Map also comes with a matching Allegheny County Topographic Map Print, both debuting at the Three Rivers Arts Festival next week 🖤💛

A few people have asked how this new puzzle compares to my Greater Pittsburgh Area Puzzle Map, so I wanted to share some side-by-side details.

The new Allegheny County version is zoomed out further and includes the full county, with pieces for municipalities, townships, boroughs, and Pittsburgh neighborhoods throughout the region.

I especially love seeing tiny places and local identities become actual puzzle pieces.

I’ll have a limited number of both the puzzles and the prints at the festival, so stop by and check them out in person this Thursday - Sunday!

A new wood puzzle map is finally coming to the Three Rivers Arts Festival! 🖤💛

This new Allegheny County Puzzle Map has pieces for every municipality, township, borough, and Pittsburgh neighborhood across the county. It’s been one of my most-requested ideas for a long time, and I’m excited to finally share it.

The puzzle officially launches at Arts Fest next week, where I’ll be set up Thursday through Sunday at the new Arts Landing.

I’ve been hearing great things from the artists there this weekend already, and I’m excited to finally see the new setup in person.

If you want early ordering access before the festival, comment PUZZLE and I’ll send you the info.

The more conversations I have at markets, the more it reinforces that this work is really about memory and connection at least as much as geography.

People point out old neighborhoods, favorite hiking trails, streets they grew up on, parks where they spent summers, or places connected to someone they love. Everyone has a place that matters deeply to them.

This custom map was made as a graduation gift for someone’s daughter, which honestly feels like such a perfect example of why I keep coming back to place-based artwork. The places we return to over and over become part of who we are.

I’m excited to share more behind-the-scenes process, stories, and projects here soon.

Still feeling really grateful after the Phipps May Market last weekend 💛 Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared stories about meaningful places, picked out artwork, or signed up to stay connected.

If you're new here, leave a comment with your favorite Pittsburgh neighborhood, park, trail, or place that feels like home to you. It helps make sure future posts actually show up in your feed instead of disappearing into the Instagram void. ✨

And as a little reintroduction, I’m Erin, the artist behind Squirrel Hill Design and Craft. I'm a third generation artist & cartographer. My work is handcrafted maps and place-based artwork inspired by the little details that make somewhere feel like home.

One of my favorite parts of doing this work is hearing how deeply people connect to places. Parks, neighborhoods, trails, childhood homes, hiking spots, wedding venues, everyone has somewhere that matters to them.

I’m excited to share more behind-the-scenes process, new artwork, local events, and projects here soon.

And thank you to everyone on the back end at Phipps and my support system for making the event happen! 🌸

While everyone’s been focused on the draft, I collected up a few “draft pics” of my own. Some behind the scenes drafting new ideas and projects.

This one’s a new display system I’ve been building over the past few months. Pics of almost finished pieces, prototypes, and a lot of in-between versions

I got back into a woodshop for the first time in about 6 years to make it happen
Really satisfying, and also very humbling to be struggle at.
Even simple things like marking and measuring I had to relearn. It felt like a good reminder that being bad at something is just part of learning.

I also (finally) taught myself isometric drawing and basic 3D modeling to plan everything out.
Both things I’d been putting off for a long time because they felt intimidating, and it’s been really satisfying to push through that. I think doing it with a project I wasn’t getting paid for really helped.

I’m working on more intentional product displays and setups to make events a lot less chaotic. In person shows are so important to my works, but anyone who’s done one knows they are so intense and demanding to actually pull off.

These are just a small slice of what I’ve been working on lately, a little behind the scenes of one of my many hats as a one-person business 👷‍♀️

Tomorrow is VegFair!

I’m emerging from hibernation and I love this springtime event. I highly recommend coming by if you’ve got some time! There’s going to be lots of other local artists plus the most delicious vegan food. Pro tip: lines were -much- shorter at VegFair than VegFest last year, but food does sell out (we all have less space than at the outdoor show). So come by and get a little lunch tasting menu of vegan food from little local PGH businesses and check out all the new stuff I’m bringing! 🥕🥦🍪⛰️🌳

Hope to see you there - let me know if you see this post when you come by!

I’m also excited to share some behind the scenes of projects that I’ve been working on here. Look at my boy’s pirouette - I’m so proud 🥹. Plus a custom order I just finished with the proof and initial request from the client. And this new display system for events that like maybe I spent too much time on but maybe it will all end up being worthwhile?
