A weekend? A few weeks? A couple of months?
The answer is usually, muchlonger than you think.
In the second post of my "Setting the Stage" series, I’m answering one of the questions I hear most often from homeowners preparing for a move or future sale:
"How much time should I actually allow to declutter my home?"
One of the biggest misconceptions is that the size of your home determines how long the process will take. Square footage matters—but it’s only part of the story.
A 1,500-square-foot home where a family has lived for 30 years may take much longer to edit than a 3,000-square-foot home occupied by two people for five.
The amount of time you’ll need depends on how long you’ve lived there, how many people have called it home, how much storage you have, the volume of belongings you’ve accumulated, and how many sentimental or family items require thoughtful decisions.
And then there’s something we often forget to account for...decision fatigue.
Decluttering an entire home involves hundreds—sometimes thousands—of decisions. Giving yourself enough time to make those decisions thoughtfully can make the entire transition feel much more manageable.
