U.S. NEWS: 78-YEAR-OLD DRIVER KILLED AFTER SUV CRASHES ONTO ROOF OF GEORGIA HOME
A bizarre and deadly crash in central Georgia left a 78-year-old man dead after his SUV somehow ended up on the roof of a home.
According to authorities, Willie H. Smith Jr., 78, was driving a white Chevrolet Equinox eastbound on Waverland Drive in Macon shortly before 10 a.m. Thursday when investigators say he apparently lost control near the intersection of Woodland Drive.
The SUV left the roadway and crashed into the roof of a residence in the 1900 block of Woodland Drive.
Paramedics treated Smith at the scene before transporting him to a local medical facility, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
Photos and video from the scene show the SUV lodged on top of the single-story home. Crews ultimately needed heavy equipment to remove the vehicle from the roof.
Authorities have not determined what caused Smith to lose control, and officials have not said whether a medical emergency may have contributed to the crash.
The crash remains under investigation.
