Hello friends! Long time, etc! Here with a good start to the year though. After making my way back into the studio in February, I was able to restock my fortune cookie reserves and then start on a very special project - my piece for the happening next weekend, March 21 & 22, here in downtown Wilmington.
So here she is. My porcelain dress. 171 pieces of porcelain hand sewn together.
Following my double mastectomy, I found myself confronted with so many feelings about my femininity and how that presents to the world through our wardrobe. Especially as a person who chose an aesthetic flat closure. I don’t have a problem with my scars - I could look at them all day and feel fine - but putting on clothes I wore prior to my surgery has been an adjustment. Who knew that one of the reasons I loved a mock neck is because it made my b***s look good. Fabric lays differently on my body now. And that is because of the choice I made.
I created this porcelain dress for a flat body. Strong but delicate. Curved but flat. The same but different.
I’d love to know what you think! I really enjoyed the technique and want to explore it more in the future.
