The past 6 months we have been making memorial stones for loved ones and pets. It has been challenging and rewarding at the same time. We pray over every family receiving a stone. Many of our customers will share a story or express how much the stone means to them in their grief. We’ve never been able to connect with our customers like this before. I’m reminded daily that people all around us are walking through grief and pain. It’s so important to be kind and show the love of Jesus to everyone you encounter - you never know what they are going through

10 weeks ago, my best friend and sister had intensive brain surgery to remove a tumor. Her recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. She is still healing and her eye is still swollen, but tonight, she celebrated life and family at a college football game. I’m so proud of her bravery and she inspires me everyday to live life to the fullest. Just look at that radiant smile on her face! So thankful for - she is a literal blessing to every single person she knows. ❤️

Let’s talk about material shortages. Our wood costs have more than doubled and we are rationed to just a 2-4 week supply from the lumber yard. Each week is like a scavenger hunt to find what we need to paint and ship orders. I know my maker friends are experiencing this too. As we gear up to Christmas, slowly get those supplies now. If it’s on the shelf, get a few extra than you normally would. Bulk up anywhere you can. Make a list of every supply you use and each week focus on getting a few extra. This week, I’m going to buy extra twine and suede ribbon. Next week, packing paper and so on. This way, I can slowly bulk up without breaking the bank. Happy hunting!

I haven’t posted since February. Honestly, I’ve been keeping my head down…just surviving. In March, a local pastor filed a lawsuit against myself and 5 others for speaking truth to power. All claims were dismissed by him a few weeks ago. We celebrate it’s over, but it wasn’t without much heartache, tears, and financial stress. However - God provided!! Every penny, every restful night, every peaceful morning with my family. Nothing can steal my joy. On top of it all, my parent’s home burned down in April. It has been a stressful time for my entire family but watching my parents endure with joy and hope has truly bolstered my faith. They have no fear for the future. All of this to say, I’m back. I’m ready to kick the devil in the teeth. I’m ready to see my family and my business thrive in this next season of life!

The number one thing that improved my business was creating a weekly production schedule. It allowed me to hire help, plan ahead and grow. I now only work about 20 hours a week because I have disciplined myself to stick to the schedule. This was a hard change for me. I love flexibility and flying by the seat of my pants. However, that only created chaos in my business and hindered my ability to get help. Here’s our schedule. Monday: laser production, Tuesday: paint and prep orders, Wednesday: design, Thursday: off, Friday: off. My employees do the rest. If you haven’t already, create a production schedule that you can replicate every week. I promise, it will free up so much time!

It’s the time of year where it’s easy for me to fall off of the radar. To get overwhelmed with work and gifts and house cleaning and the other endless tasks that consume me. Everyday, I have to intentionally focus on the real purpose of this season. It’s not the stuff. It’s not the task list. It’s Jesus and his never ending love for people. I’m just posting this little reminder for myself to read tomorrow and the next day and the day after that.

The Story Behind Black Butterfly

After a difficult summer in 2016, my family found ourselves drowning in personal debt. In order for our family to survive, we had to make an additional $1000 per month just to pay our additional bills. I felt desperate – which is usually the starting place for most great comebacks.

I always had a knack for making artwork and home decor and if I could pair that with my 15 years of corporate marketing experience and my husband’s woodworking skills, perhaps we could make the extra money. We started creating custom artwork for individuals and selling them on Facebook. I was surprised at how many people wanted a custom saying or family name on artwork. I’d come home from my full-time job and work all night and every weekend to get the orders delivered. Most customers would ask me if I had an Etsy shop. It took me a few months to get the hint to open an Etsy shop. I took every Etsy educational course I could find online to learn how to be a successful seller online. It felt like going to college all over again. Using all of my new knowledge, in Spring 2017, I listed my first products and started to see orders slowly trickle in. We quickly made the decision to only sell on Etsy and discontinue Facebook sales. I was still working a full-time marketing job while hustling nights and weekends to make it all work. In October of 2017, we found ourselves at a crossroads. Either go all in with this business so we can support the anticipated rush for Christmas or pull back and refocus on my corporate career. I could no longer sustain both a growing Etsy business and a full-time career. I pushed my chips in and bet on myself. In October 2017, I left my full-time corporate job to be a maker and entrepreneur.

Since taking that giant leap of faith, our business has grown substantially. We have had the honor of working with celebrities, respected corporations, and over 10,000 amazing residential customers. We have also been featured in Buzzfeed, Country Interiors Magazine, PopSugar, Us Weekly and The Real. We are now focused on helping other makers and crafters learn how to be successful on Etsy.
