Originally made as Chinese shop signs, these panels have taken on a completely different life today.

The blue-and-white porcelain characters, dark wood and vertical format give them the presence of artwork—especially when displayed together as a pair.

It’s one of the things we love about older objects: something made for one purpose can become something entirely different generations later.

The raised head catches your eye first. Then the ears, the stance, the slight turn of the body.

A few sculpted details give this terracotta horse so much personality.

Here's one detail worth knowing.

Look closely at the corners of this 1920s Chinese camphor wood chest and you'll find dovetail joints—interlocking cuts used to join the boards together.

It's the kind of construction detail that's easy to miss until someone shows you where to look.

And once you see it, you'll start looking for it everywhere.

A folding chair—with a history much older than you'd expect.

Designed for portability, this 19th-century Chinese traveler's chair folds at the frame and combines a woven seat and footrest with an intricately carved back.

It's a reminder that practical design didn't have to mean simple design.

Where would you use it today?
