Can you dig it? Let me hip you to a heavyweight cat strutting straight out of the greenhouse and right into the scene. This ain't just any ordinary green—this is Lord Sillamontanas’ eccentric cousin, a smooth operator who hopped clean into the backseat when we rolled up on Reiff's Nursery & Greenhouses and’s been holding it down in Better Thumb territory ever since.

Now, he runs things as the Duke of the House of Tradescantia, but among friends, the man prefers to go by his street name: ‘White Velvet.’

As you can surmise, this fella’s got a few distinct quirks about him:
- The Crown: He sports a heavy mane of frosty white hair that only gets thicker and flashier the more sun you lay on him.
- The Pace: He moves at his own cool, deliberate speed—growing exclusively one pristine leaf per plant over the last few months, because greatness can’t be rushed. He knows true perfection takes an exorbitant amount of patience.
- The Glow: The man flushes a cool, confident pink whenever the vibe is right. Not the best face for playing poker, but great if you are looking to attract the sleek Pistachio White Trad wife down the block.

We don't rightly know what sent him our way, but one thing is certain: he’s wrapped in White Velvet, and business has never looked so good.

Some classic love stories involve sweeping romance, but mine usually involves me coming home with more plants.

When I crossed paths again with Adams Family Farm at the Garden Drive-In Flea Market a few weekends ago, of course I splurged and brought home some end of summer succulents (and a replacement Tradescantia 'Pink Panther' since I sort of drowned my first attempt). I even found this super cute gravy boat at the flea-market - talk about fated!

I highly recommend checking out Adams Family greenhouse if you get a chance in the spring, they had a ton of variety and everything I have purchased from them has been healthy and resilient.

(Psst: This one-of-a-kind piece is up for grabs on my marketplace if you want it for your Thanksgiving table -

Earlier this week we talked pothos and branched out into philodendrons, but I clearly couldn't stop myself from adding one more troublemaker to the family tree: enter the Swiss Cheese Monstera (Monstera adansonii).

If we’re keeping score on our messy family tree, it’s still part of the same Araceae (aroid) crew at the Family level. But once you zoom in, it earns its own separate Genus (Monstera), distinct from both Epipremnum (pothos) and Philodendron.

Historically, botanists and nurseries just assumed any aroid with a trailing habit and heart-shaped leaves was the same beast. To be fair, they share the exact same vibe: dramatic, chaotic growth and a love for chunky soil. Genetic testing has since made the official family tree way more accurate, which leaves us with just one tiny hurdle: getting every gardener on earth to agree on what to call them.
Meet the newest member of the crew!

My bank account is currently screaming, but at least this one comes pre-ventilated. 👇👇✨

Aloe, Vera, and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Itchy Week 🪴✨

In a kingdom that took gardening way too seriously, there lived an aloe named Vera. Vera was old, wise, and possessed a severe case of middle-age spread. While the younger succulents stood at military-grade attention, Vera had a distinct, horizontal lean. She was floppy, she had character, and to the realm's elite, she was completely useless.

Every year, the kingdom threw the Grand Horticultural Exhibition—a high-stakes popularity contest where premier gardeners scavenged for the most aggressively exotic plants to present to the King. The prize? Absolute monopoly over the best shelf space, organic fertilizer, and custom pots. 👑🏆

Lord Kalanchoe was the undefeated heavyweight champion of this ridiculous circus, and he didn't play fair. Using last year’s prize money, he ran a secret cartel, funding elite gardeners to study fussy, high-maintenance flora so his entries would always blind the King with their flashiness. Vera watched this annual madness from her dusty corner, sipping water once a month and sighing deeply. ☕🌱

Then came the week before the big show, and Kalanchoe's foolproof team experienced the full force of the karma owed to them. ⚡

While trying to harvest a volatile trio—the scorching Ember-Briar, a Spore-Sputtering Fungal Vine, and the infamous Weeping Itch-Thicket—the secret gardeners completely botched their safety protocols. 🌿🔥💥

Gardener one turned his palms into oversized blisters. Gardener two inhaled spores and broke out in a bioluminescent rash. Gardener three tripped into the itch-thicket and now looked like a neon-orange pin cushion. 🤢🩹

Panicking and looking like a medical waste hazard, the trio abandoned all dignity, sprinting past Kalanchoe’s priceless orchids, and threw themselves at Vera’s mercy.

With a heavy sigh, Vera went to work. She quietly sacrificed her outer leaves, deploying her cooling gel to soothe the burns, clear the fungus, and calm the apocalyptic itching. By the time she was finished, Vera was a total mess—asymmetrical, missing chunks, and leaning at an angle that defied physics. 🩺💚

Judgment day arrived. Kalanchoe strutted in, dragging his bandaged, ointment-slicked gardeners behind him. The King walked down the line, poked a carnivorous pitcher plant, scoffed at a glitter-dusted bromeliad, and finally stopped at the lopsided wreck of Vera in the corner. 👑🧐

"What," the King demanded, "is that glorious disaster?"

Purely exhausted from their ordeal, the sniffling, still-itchy gardeners confessed everything—the cartel, the illegal training funds, and how this battered aloe had saved their skin without a single complaint.

And then, the King made his ruling. 📜

"For years," the King announced, "we've rewarded high-maintenance divas that contribute nothing. But true grit lies in the one who fixes our messes."

The grand prize went straight to Vera. She got the prime spot under the giant skylight with luxury fertilizer, while Kalanchoe and his broken cartel were banished to the dark corner behind the bulk perlite order. ☀️🪴

As for Vera? She stretched out under her new sunbeam, adjusted her awkward lean, and muttered, "Next year, emergency triage is strictly BYO-gel." 😎🌿

The Moral of the Story:
Being flawless and photogenic is great until things go terribly wrong, at which point everyone suddenly remembers who the actual backbone of the operation is. 💪🍃

Wandering through Creekside Gardens makes me realize that running a botanical kingdom is going to require about five hundred more years of learning, a heck of a lot of grit, and an agressive hydration schedule.

I'm taking copious notes on how they pulled off this masterpiece because someday Better Thumb Botanicals needs a brick-and-mortar jungle just like it (but with more tie dye and a few greenhouse hounds for moral support).

Yesterday we talked pothos, but my greenhouse trip also convinced me to branch out into a brand-new genus: enter the Philodendrons.

To understand how these relate, think of plant classification like a messy family tree.
At the Family level, both pothos and philodendrons are part of Araceae (the aroid crew). But when you zoom in to the Genus, they split —pothos belong to Epipremnum and these new guys belong to Philodendron. Finally, you get down to the individual Species or cultivar (like Philodendron hederaceum 'Brasil' or Philodendron bipinnatifidum 'Xanadu').

Except plant taxonomy is a total mess. Nurseries spent decades swapping names, lumping everything with a heart-shaped leaf under "philodendron," and passing down gossip-tier taxonomy. I sure thought I was buying a pothos when I picked up the Philodendron Brasil and grabbed the Xanadu because it looked like an entirely different alien lifeform—yet they're all part of that same root Araceae family.

Meet the newest members of the crew! I’ll be dropping a specific care guide for each once they actually settle in and grow a bit, but for now: Which is your favorite, the Philodendron Brasil (heart-shaped leaves) or the Philodendron 'Xanadu' (with the zig-zag leaves)? 👇✨

Just when I decided to stop growing the kingdom and start winterizing, I HAD to grab this Pearls and Jade Pothos that was whispering sweet nothings to me at Creekside Gardens.

In peak plant-addict behavior, I "accidentally" bumped into it, knocked off a single leaf, and gaslit my husband into thinking it was structurally ruined and "If I broke it, I HAVE to buy it"!

Look at that variegation though. Completely worth the stress of executing a completely flawless botanical heist. 💚🪴

*** Spoiler alert: I failed to stop at just one. ***

Stay tuned this week as I subject you all to a crash botany lesson on how my newest rogues fit into the family!

THIS is my happy place..... the place that convinced me to add not one, but two, entirely new plant genera to my collection—introductions to follow. 🌱✨

Dropped off a bunch of plant babies at The blooming barn - they're getting all stocked up for their Autumn in the Creek event this weekend!

You can find most of my greenery in the main room next to the mister's display (aka. Sore Thumb Woodcrafts).

And don't forget to look up - you might just find a pretty new pink or white tradescantia to get you through the winter.

PLEASE give them a good home so I don't "accidentally" sneak them back into my dining room 🤣
