When you think of Diana Vreeland’s jewelry, the tusk pendant she wore might leap to mind or even the costume Chanel pearls, but she had sensational designs from some of the most creative fine jewelry designers of the 20th century and close relationships with each of them.

She met Coco Chanel, Fulco Verdura, Suzanne Belperron and Jean Schlumberger during the 1930s when she lived in London and spent a lot of time in Paris. During the 1970s, she became close with the Gianni and Nicola Bulgari as well as Elsa Peretti who often wrote her postcards from her travels all over the world.

I started my career researching in this room at the NY Public Library main branch, reading old issues of Jeweler’s Circular, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. I can’t tell you what joy I felt going back and spending over three hours there yesterday in a smaller, equally beautiful room off of this one, the Brooke Russell Astor Reading Room.

I feel like it rearranged the cells in my brain to be offline, touching documents, Polaroids and postcards from an archive in the library that is nowhere near digitized or online. AI knows nothing of what I saw.

Jewelry presentations during this NY Fashion Week ran a wild gamut of styles. I saw antique diamonds DARIUS - hairwork was part of the J. Hannah collection - Bergdorf Goodman There were new pieces from FRANCESCA VILLA | Finely crafted jewellery with stories to tell and I tried on one of the Nail Ornaments MELLERIO revived from the design they patented in 1951. BERNARD JAMES blew me away with his Morganite pendant and shop-in-shop at USM.
I was lucky enough to attend the 20th anniversary screening of Marie Antoinette with Rebecca Selva of Fred Leighton who provided all the queen’s jewelry for the production. Sofia Coppola told amazing BTS stories in a Q & A afterwards.
Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund finalist George Inaki of MILAMORE FINE JEWELRY presented his collection with Japanese kintsugi inspired pieces, revolving around the idea of “mended, not broken” on 9/11 and it was so perfect.

Over the last 25 years, I’ve rarely done a “never forget“ post, because I thought, “How could anyone forget what happened on that day?” But time has marched on. I have friends who were children, really infants, when it happened. And they don’t know the whole story. Someone told me yesterday, they didn’t even mark the occassion at her son’s school in Manhattan last year, which took my breath away.

I remember it all and the days after...

On the morning of September 12, I went to get the newspapers. They hadn’t been delievered yet. The guy selling them at the newstand was just outside the door and he said to me in a very New York way, “You know the news.”

As the days went on, the local publications handled it so poignantly. The Daily News commissioned the “I ♥️ New York” graphic designer Milton Glaser to revamp his famous message. Glaser singed the side of the ♥️ and expressed what we were all thinking. I am sure I burst into tears when first I saw the Village Voice “Wish You Were Here” postcard cover, because I did again this morning when I pulled it out of my trunk. And then there was the now famous all black New Yorker cover with the Towers in darker black.

I don’t mean to sound like a sap but, I am always grateful when someone like Kendall puts their considerable influence behind a rarefied topic like Alexander Calder jewelry. The artist brought such joy to his jewelry-making, he still inspires so many.

I adored diving back into the subject, which had a moment at the Calder exhibit in Paris this year. But has not been the full focus of an exhibit since Louisa Guinness’s great show in 2016. Before that you really have to go all the way back to the 2008 Calder Jewelry exhibit that touched down at The Met.

I put all my favorite facts about the artist’s jewelry in my story at the link in bio, like that time when Sheila Metzner wore one of his necklaces in a 1990 Gap ad and blew our minds as well as the jewelry he made for some of the great women of the 20th century from Georgia O’Keefe and Simone de Beauvoir to Jeanne Moreau. It’s so interesting to note how the pieces he made for these women fit their personalities to perfection.

It felt like a style miracle when I found a pair of vintage Ray Bans just like the ones Gloria wore at the 1972 DNC. I have never had the guts to put them over my hair the way she did, but I might just do it today. RIP Gloria Steinem

Rene Boivin is a name I don’t think we talk about enough. The brand is back in business with a new boutique in Paris, but they are kind of keeping things on the lowdown. I dove deep on the history in this post covering everything from the famous designs and who wore them to the fact that Rene Boivin’s wife was Paul Poiret’s sister.

At the time the couple got together Paul Iribe, an IYKYK name if there ever was one, did illustrations for Poiret. Jean Schlumberger’s right hand man Nicolas Bongard was Paul and Jeanne Poiret’s nephew. Suzanne Belperron started her career at Boivin. And so much more.

I published this story on Sunday and have been thinking about it ever since. I could’ve turned the article inside out and written fully about one aspect - how independent designers of “It” jewels handle the dupes. One just started a trade in your dupe program for a cash credit towards the real deal and another makes costume dupes of her own work and donates part of the proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

I have filled my gallery above with photos of the designers instead of the jewels, because they are the people who came up with the ideas and you know what their jewels look like. Everyone does.

There is something about the dog days of summer that always inspires me to cue up classic movies for entertainment at home. The Women (1939) has long been in my top 10 list of favorites.

The film, which was called “a glorious cat-clawing rampage” by the New York Times when it was released, swirls around the gossip and facts of affairs, marriages and divorces.

Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Paulette Goddard clearly felt good jewelry was key to standing out in the star studded cast of women. Each wore their own treasures in the production.

Find out about the jewels which include Paulette’s gold charm encrusted compact and Trabert & Hoeffer-Mauboussin cuff which resurfaced at Sotheby’s a few years ago and sold for more than $211,000 and Joan Crawford’s massive citrine and gold cuff which is now part of Neil Lane’s collection.
