While driving through the Provençal countryside, I kept spotting these tall, dark cypress trees—arrow-straight against the sky. I took photos of them standing like sentinels, lining fields and roadsides. In “Cypresses” (1889), Van Gogh captured these same trees but made them swirl and dance with life. He saw not just the trees, but their spirit. Standing before those same trees, I could see why Van Gogh was so obsessed. They're bold yet peaceful, and in that Mediterranean light, they carry a drama that he amplified with his genius.

Through my lens... Van Gogh’s “Farmhouse in Provence”..........

Travelling thru Provence, France in 2023, I came across a rural scene—green fields, pale beige farmhouse, and tall cypresses standing guard behind it. The simplicity of it was stunning. “Farmhouse in Provence,” 1888, Van Gogh paints almost exactly this: a house huddled into the landscape, flanked by dark trees and under an expressive sky. This was the closest I felt to Van Gogh’s Provence.
The same farmhouse geometry, the same agricultural calm, and those same eternal trees—it was like the painting stepped out of the canvas and into my viewfinder.
