Meet the maker: reviews

I’m always extremely grateful when someone takes the time to write me a review. But if I’m honest it means more than that.

I’ve never been good at recognising the value in my work. I don’t say this to attract attention or comments but self doubt has always been ‘a thing’. I think many artist feel this way. I think it’s a useful tool in someways… but not always.

So when I get a review it means everything. Makes me feel stronger, validated, needed.

So thank you to everyone who’s made me feel this way. Not just the written reviews but to face to face feedback too.

I love you all ❤️

Meet the Makers: Photography

Well this is an interesting one!

I love to capture a picture of what I make for so many reasons! From social media, inspiration for others and the pieces are not mine to keep, they are for the families that commissioned them so I want to capture them before they leave me for their forever homes.

So here’s the process, it’s usually around 7am when the house is super busy I’ll say to Kris “can I borrow you to take some photos!” He never moans and always fits me in. Then I don’t post them straight away as either, you’ve not got them back yet (wouldn’t want you to see them on my page 1st as that’s not ok) or they are a present for Christmas etc so can’t ruin a surprise! So guess what happens? I don’t post them!

So a massive shout out to Kris for always being my willing photographer! (Just one of his unpaid jobs for TPT) ❤️ and here’s some photos of his 7am shoots!

Meet the Maker: Favourite things to make.,

This is a tough one as I don’t dislike making anything! (Although I can get frustrated when stoneware glaze combos don’t turn out well 😢)

I love the Christmas Eve plates and baubles A LOT - I know how special they are to people and often, they are gifted to Aunties / Grandparents / loved ones for them to cherish and let’s face it, Christmas is a magical time of year.

Somethings are harder to make than others, and sometimes when it’s a bit harder, it gives the most reward to when I see them come out of the kiln.

I have chosen this Easter plate as an example of one of my faves, I love doing bunnies (not sure why!) but next to the carrot it’s super cute! 🥕

Meet the Maker: When did it all begin?

I’ve always been creative and enjoyed being a maker but I’d never done it as a full time career until I left E.ON in 2019 (yes 6 months before the 1st lockdown!)

I love art in many different forms and at Art college and my Mum always said I should have done photography as a degree but the pull of ceramics was stronger. So that’s what I did.

I would describe myself as a ‘print maker’ an overarching description, who’d of thought this would of been so literal as one of main part of what I do is baby prints on ceramics lol.

This photo is of the ‘favours’ I made for our wedding and one of the 1st things I made as I started to build the bridge to being self employed. It’s easy to look at these and be critical and say they were a bit ‘rough and ready’ or to look at my calligraphy writing 5 years ago and wonder how I let it leave my studio.

But being in business is a journey. Life is of course a journey where you grow and learn. And I’m enjoying every moment. So thank you to everyone who has ever supported me, encouraged me, & championed me. I love you all. ❤️

Meet the Maker: WHERE

Simply put, I’m based in Mapperley Nottingham. I have my home studio there this is where I can welcome people to come and where I make my own pottery too.

I’m originally from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire (anyone that meets me will know I still have a strong accent!) and this is where I was ‘born and bred’ I definitely identify as a Yorkshire Lass!

You will also find me at Baby Groups. I love those days. I love the partnerships with the fabulous ladies who run such a vital community for new mums to come and thrive.

And I also go to some Makers Market - I’d love to do more of these. It fills me with such joy when someone wants to have something I’ve made and of course, I get to chat (which I’m also very good at!)
