here we have an early 20th century toleware table lamp in the French Empire style, in the form of a pillar on squared base, it has the most wonderful deep red / burgundy for the background colour with painted details in gold, what is remarkable is the completely untouched original condition of this lamp, there is some paint loss but I would have been suspicious if not, the original bulb holders stamped by a US maker ' LEVITON USA' the lamp has been re-wired and retains the original Bakelite switch and plug and works great,

a very nicely modeled French Rooster with great colour and patina, a true symbol of France steeped in history, this example is cast in bronze with the most wonderful colour to its body, as you can see from the underside it was always meant to stand with out a base,

History of the ~French Rooster

In the Middle Ages, the Gallic Rooster was widely used as a religious symbol, the sign of hope and faith. It was during the Renaissance that the rooster began to be associated with the emerging French nation.

Under the Valois and the Bourbon kings, the royal effigy was often accompanied by this animal, meant to stand for France, in engravings and on coins. Although still a minor emblem, the rooster could be found at both the Louvre and Versailles.

I wont bore you any longer lets just say the Rooster has become the symbol of France,

Period : 1940-50
