This week’s featured plant is Christmas Cactus Schlumbergera.

What it is:
A tropical cactus native to Brazil’s rainforests, not the desert. Blooms around late Nov-Jan with pink, red, white, or purple flowers. Flat, segmented stems with scalloped edges. Can live 20-30+ years. Often confused with Thanksgiving cactus — Christmas cactus has more rounded stem edges.

Benefits
Air purifier: NASA studies found Schlumbergera helps remove indoor VOCs
Pet-safe: Non-toxic to cats and dogs, unlike many holiday plants
Mood booster: Winter blooms add color when most plants are dormant
Low maintenance: Forgiving if you forget to water occasionally
Heirloom plant: Easy to propagate — pass cuttings to family

🌱 Light: Bright, indirect. East window is perfect. Too much sun = red/purple stems |
🌱 Water: Water when top 1 inch is dry. Less in winter. Use a pot with drainage
🌱 Soil: Well-draining mix. 2 parts potting soil + 1 part perlite or orchid bark

Common problems:
Bud drop: Usually from drafts, moving plant, or overwatering
Limp/wrinkled: Thirsty. Soak, then drain fully
Mushy base: Overwatered/root rot. Take cuttings to save it

SE Michigan tip: They love our humid summers outside in shade. Bring in before frost.

$4 for Christmas cactus in 6” pot.

Every Thursday we’ll be featuring a houseplant we have available with some facts & tips to care for it. 🌿

✨ This week’s featured plant is Dracaena trifasciata, or more commonly known as Snake plant. ✨

Snake plants are one of the easiest houseplants around. They have tall, stiff, sword-like leaves and are great for beginners, low-light rooms, and people who forget to water.
Bonus: NASA studies show they help filter indoor air and release oxygen at night.

Care Tips:
🌱 Light: Tolerates low light but thrives in bright, indirect light. Can handle some direct sun.
🌱Water: Less is more. Water only when soil is 100% dry — usually every 2-6 weeks. Overwatering is the #1 killer.
🌱Soil & Pot: Use cactus/succulent mix in a pot with drainage holes. They like to be a bit root-bound.
🌱Temperature: Keep above 50°F. Normal room temps are perfect. Avoid cold drafts.
🌱Fertilizer: Optional. Feed once or twice in spring/summer with diluted houseplant fertilizer.
🌱Cleaning: Wipe leaves with a damp cloth occasionally so they can “breathe.”
🌱Toxicity: Mildly toxic to pets if chewed, so keep out of reach if your cat/dog is a plant nibbler.
