I’ve enjoyed using up scrap in the shop to make small boxes lately. Noah got in on it as well and made some Christmas gifts. My favorite part is wrapping the grain.

What started out as a daybed porch swing turned into my daughter’s first big girl bed. We were getting rid of the crib and needed something quick. I had plans of a two story playhouse bed for her, but that was going to take too long. So the solid white oak porch swing moved back to center stage in the shop after the legs had been started on months before. First time using mahogany dowels (in the armrests). And I really wish I had a domino when I was setting those backrest slats. Would have made things easier and cleaning. Three by 1.5 by 0.5 tenons for the base into the legs.

It probably will still make it out to the porch somewhere down the line. Finished with tung oil as prep.

While not 100% finished (it still needs feet), this dresser has been a long time coming. This cherry tree was cut down in a friend’s backyard in Red Bank in 2019. I milled it in Jan 2020, two weeks before Noah was born. It’s been drying and stored at my house ever since, waiting for the perfect project.
It now lives on as the case and top for my daughter’s dresser. Quartersawn rays and bookmatched knots highlight the side panels. Each piece carefully picked out including the continuous grain drawer fronts (sourced separately).
I hope she enjoys it for a very long time.

Special thanks to JC and Blair for the tree
Drawer fronts also locally sourced from Lumberjacks Hardwood Center

And a slightly smaller, purple version of the bookshelf. Isabella has been needing a proper bookshelf for a while now and I finally finished it. Think she’ll be able to grow with this one for a few years.

Been a while and I’ve missed posting a few things, but this is the most recent build. New bookshelf in my son’s favorite color. Side by side of the old and the new. Think he should have plenty of room now.

First time using these matte black handles. Think it does the cherry grain well. All natural finish for this live edge charcuterie board.

Coming up I have a dresser and bed build for my daughter.

Now that the wedding is over and the gift has been given, I can post about this recent batch job I did. I first started on these last fall, and then they got put off on the back bench for months while the holidays, commissioned work, and family took priority.
Four cheese slicer boards and six wine caddies with a mix of walnut, maple, and cherry all finished with Tried and True Danish oil.

Four weeks ago I spoke to some loggers clearing a new lot at the back of the neighborhood. I was able to salvage some sections of red and white oak. One of the red oak sections I further processed over the weekend and by Sunday night it made it to my oven. For steam bending that is. I used it to make the crest for Noah’s new ‘higher chair’. It’s similar to my previous staked chairs but with 22” legs instead of 18”. We needed Noah to give up the high chair for Isabella and the regular chairs left him a little low to reach the table for meal times. Perfect fix.

Bonus: it doubles as a good height for the island bar and still slides underneath the counter.

Latest commissioned piece. Toddler play table with open shelf base. Raised edge trim is perfect for keeping pieces on the table. Keep swiping to see it in action on its first day in house.

The last thing I made before Christmas, to the point of final coat of paint on the heart the morning of Christmas Eve. This one is for my wife. She wasn’t sure exactly what she wanted, but she has been asking for one of these for the front porch for a long time. Think I’ll do the CNC carving different next time, but I’m happy with how this one turned out.

Always a good time to be thankful. I made this cheese slicer board to say thank you to a neighbor who recently helped us when our daughter was so sick. Good to have good neighbors. And thrilled to have a smiling, little girl back.
