I recently brought home this antique bed that belonged to my grandparents and I’ve been going down the rabbit hole on it trying to learn more about its origins

From what I’ve been able to piece together, it looks to be an American walnut Victorian Renaissance Revival bed with some Eastlake influence, probably dating somewhere around the 1870s-1890s

There are several furniture makers of this period but I kept seeing reference to some Herter Bros pieces that have a similar look, which would be cool, but I haven’t found anything definitive about the maker of this bed so I will keep searching for that.

I started paying attention to the carvings and noticed the flowers that appear on the upper portion of the headboard.

I thought they looked like poppies, so of course I had to go see what I could find about that too. 😂

Poppies have long been associated with sleep and remembrance, and flowers had all kinds of meanings during the Victorian era.

Now I’m wondering if these were simply carved because they were pretty or if there was actually some meaning behind them.

This is why I love antiques. You can look at something 150 years old and keep finding something else to wonder about.

So now I’m curious what y’all see.

Renaissance Revival? Eastlake? Herter Brothers influence? Or am I lost down the rabbit hole? 🥴

You know those little towns you visit on vacation where the downtown is just full of life? Little shops, antique stores, restaurants, people walking around and something interesting around every corner.

I always find myself wishing we had more of that right here at home.

The Hunny Hole is open today, along with a whole bunch of other small businesses downtown. Grab a friend, wander around, pop into some shops and see what you find.

We’ve got some pretty good little businesses right here in our own backyard. Let’s enjoy them and see what we can make of our little town.
