California officials are seeking trading cooperation with Shanghai in the agricultural sector.
"We want more Californian farm products to be sold in China," said Karen Ross, secretary of the Food and Agriculture Department in California.
She made the remarks at California Week, a promotional campaign featuring California food, products, tourism and education, which was launched by the Shanghai Oriental Pearl International Communication Co Ltd and the Xanadu Enterprise Shanghai Ltd at the city's downtown area on Wednesday.
California sold $1.7 billion worth of wine, fruit and other farm products to China last year.
"The export trend is expected to go up this year," Ross said.
The delegation consisting of chief executive officers from 18 enterprises came to the city on the even of the launch of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone to learn more about Shanghai and to become better known to more Chinese customers, she said.
The group visited the city's agricultural commission after arriving earlier this week and discussed ways to cooperate in farm production and the use of clean water and clean energy.
"Discussion is under way and both are seeking partners," she said, adding that "It's a good beginning and projects could be launched in the near future if things go smoothly."

China-Africa development depends on nourishing young entrepreneurs, says the founder of Junior Forum.
"We should first recognize the history of relations between us, since most people may think that China and African countries have just entered a new relationship," says Belinga Thierry, 31, chairman of the Junior Africa China Economic Forum.
By tracing the history, Belinga, from the Cameroon capital of Yaounde, says China's presence in Africa today is positive and practical. He compares it to a friend who visits another to compare cultures, resources and ideas on how to improve lives.
"It's not wrong to say that the Chinese presence in Africa is mostly geared towards doing business - that is, using their comparative advantage as a means of exchanging goods and services," Belinga says. "But it's wrong to reduce it to just doing business. There is a deep cultural exchange that exists, and with that, China and Africa have built a strong friendship and relationship that will last for many generations to come.
"To enhance and reinforce that relationship, Chinese and African youth who represent the current and the future thinking have to come together as one body to create and sustain economic growth."
Following this belief, he created the Junior Africa China Economic Forum, in the hope that by training and equipping African youth, they can change the face of Africa positively in the next 10 years.
Many young Chinese and African people are not entrepreneurial and are unaware of the opportunities offered to them in China and in Africa, Belinga says, and the young entrepreneurs whom he and his team have found do not know how to start a business. Yet, there are many Chinese companies in Africa struggling to find people who can help them with their operations, particularly ones trained in China.
The forum was set up in response to this situation, but building a new network of young entrepreneurs requires appropriate training resources and workshops.
"At present, we have more than 100 participants in the forum, and have the full support of 15 African students unions and several African embassies in China, and Chinese companies," Belinga says. "Our primary strategy is to organize regular seminars and one international conference every year. We also plan to create a website to equip and train participants, where they can also share their experiences."
The forum has four main activities: conference-themed presentations with Q&A sessions, workshop sessions, business meetings, and companies' product exhibitions.
Its first forum, which took place in Beijing over two days in June, was on youth, entrepreneurship and economic growth.
"After two days of intensive work, the forum helped people find new business partners, and we can't wait for next year's to see what these partnership agreements have brought," Belinga says.
He is also hoping for more partnerships between Chinese and African universities that will bring together young people to discuss and propose solutions to problems faced by both economies.
"Having exchange programs among African and Chinese Universities will help achieve that purpose," Belinga says. "We appreciate the initiative taken by the Chinese government to grant annual scholarships to African students, but for more effectiveness, we need more."
Belinga says he finds young Chinese entrepreneurs are more relationship-oriented, allowing time to establish trust and friendship with partners. Once that trust is gained, everything goes smoothly, he says. Young African entrepreneurs are more results-oriented, focusing more on the benefits to be gained at the end.
Chinese and African entrepreneurs also differ in their ability to meet deadlines when doing businesses, Belinga says. "Because of the lack of appropriate infrastructure, there is a delay on the part of African entrepreneurs to give vital information required by their partners. During the forum, we found a way to solve this issue by suggesting African participants have a database of vital information, which is to be regularly updated.
"We also emphasized that both Chinese and African young entrepreneurs should be truthful when accepting an order. What is the sense of pretending that you have the ability to supply goods when in fact you can't?"
Belinga summarizes the method of releasing true potential in young entrepreneurs as:
First, young people should be offered internships and other opportunities for voluntary service, where they can work, learn and discover their potential.
Second, financial resources should be allocated to those who have feasible and profitable projects. And, finally, there should be seminars and forums on topics such as entrepreneurship and leadership for both African and Chinese young people.
"Dr Myles Munroe, a well-known international speaker, emphasizes that work is the master key to releasing people's potential," Belinga says. "If we want to see people's potential, let's give them work. If they can't work, let's teach them how to work.
"With the right resources at our disposal, we can achieve our dreams and improve people's lives and livelihoods," he says of his forum. "Four weeks before the first forum, we had less than 3,000 yuan ($490) to realize this program. But we found ourselves at the right place, with the right people, who believed in our dream and who decided to help us achieve it.
"After the forum, we were so happy to see three Chinese people who traveled all the way to Kinshasa with the CEO of Congolese company Alma SPRL.
"Another successful outcome of the forum was the creation of an international company whose goal is to collect and finance feasible and profitable projects in Africa. We look forward to seeing many more projects of these sorts.
"We're sure that the next edition of the Junior Africa China Economic Forum will have a greater impact than the first one. So we welcome any companies, organizations and individuals who want to join us in that exciting adventure of changing our communities."

China will publish a list of its 10 worst - and best - cities for air pollution each month, a top leader said on Wednesday, as the country pushes officials to dispel a persistent smog crisis that is fuelling public anger.
Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli said the move would help cities meet targets for cleaning up their air and promote more environmentally-friendly economic growth, the central government said on its website (www.gov.cn).
It did not say when publication of the lists would start.
"Local government must accept responsibility for air quality, and the state will publish every month a list of the 10 worst and 10 best cities for air pollution," the statement quoted Zhang telling a meeting in the capital, Beijing, as he urged all parts of the country to meet their targets.
"Combating air pollution is a long-term, difficult and complex task," Zhang added. "We must stress the cleaning up of polluted cities and the cutting and management of pollutants."
China has been under pressure to tackle air pollution after thick, hazardous smog engulfed much of the industrial north, including Beijing, in January.
It has also been anxious to douse potential unrest as an increasingly affluent urban populace turns against a growth-at-all-costs economic model that has besmirched much of China's air, water and soil.
The problem has hurt China's economic competitiveness too, with many foreign companies finding it hard to entice executives to accept appointments in Beijing or other Chinese cities with notorious air pollution problems.
China this week unveiled far-reaching steps to tackle smog, with plans to slash coal use and shut polluting industrial units, but experts said attaining the bold targets would be a major challenge.

Confidence among Chinese entrepreneurs fell in the third quarter of the year from the second quarter, a central bank survey revealed on Wednesday.
The entrepreneur confidence index, a gauge of views and opinions from Chinese entrepreneurs on the domestic economy, retreated 1 percentage point to 62.8 percent, said the People's Bank of China.
But the decrease rate narrowed 3.2 percentage points from that in the previous quarter.
The index was 3.6 percentage points higher year on year.
About 59.4 percent of respondents thought the macro-economy was "normal," 37.8 percent said it was "relatively cold" and 2.8 percent believed it to be "relatively hot."
As for export orders, they remained "unchanged" for 62.3 percent in the third quarter from the second quarter, with 18.6 percent receiving fewer and 19.1 percent getting more orders.
There was a similar performance for domestic orders. About 61.6 percent said orders were "unchanged," 21 percent received fewer and 17.4 percent had more.

Almost 60 percent of urban Chinese people found prices of consumer goods in the third quarter as "high and unacceptable," a central bank survey said on Wednesday.
At 59.7 percent, it was up 0.6 percentage point from the previous quarter.
About 48 percent forecast that consumer prices in the fourth quarter will be stable or decrease, with 41.7 percent predicting rises and 10.3 percent saying "it is hard to say."
The People's Bank of China surveyed 20,000 urbanites in 50 cities.
About 85.4 percent of respondents believed their incomes "rose" or stayed "basically stable" in the third quarter. The figure was almost the same as the previous quarter, but down 0.4 percentage point year on year.
About 67.6 percent complained that property prices were "high and unacceptable," up 0.9 percentage point from the previous quarter. The survey showed 30.3 percent believed property prices were "acceptable" and 2.1 percent said they were "satisfactory."
China's consumer price index rose 2.6 percent year on year in August, down from 2.7 percent in July. Consumer inflation has remained between 2 percent and 3.2 percent this year, comfortably below the government's full-year ceiling target of 3.5 percent.
House prices continued to rise in most Chinese cities last month. Of a statistical pool of 70 major cities, 66 saw a month-on-month rise in new home prices, up from 62 in July, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday.

Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli has called for resolute and steady efforts to combat air pollution in heavily-polluted areas surrounding the country's capital.
Zhang, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the comments Wednesday at a meeting on the prevention and control of air pollution in Beijing and its surrounding areas.
At the meeting, the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) and the governments of six province-level regions signed an agreement on the goals and responsibilities for air pollution prevention and control.
The six regions, all located in the northern part of China, suffer the most from heavy air pollution, including capital Beijing, municipality Tianjin, provinces of Hebei, Shanxi and Shandong and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Earlier statistics by the MEP showed that air pollution in Beijing and its neighbors Tianjin and Hebei was heavier than other parts of the country in August.
A total of 13 monitored cities in the region had about 20 of the 31 days in August failing to meet the required standards, said the MEP.
Describing the fight against air pollution as a "long-term, arduous and complicated task," Zhang called for determination and steady methods that focus on key areas and are implemented gradually.
"Cities that are heavily polluted should be key targets, with strengthened supervision on various pollution sources and efforts to cut them down," said Zhang.
According to Zhang, a list of ten cities with the best air quality and ten with the worst will be published each month.
He stressed less use of coal, clean energy as substitutes, emission reduction for automobiles, promotion of public transportation and environment-friendly industrial technology.
According to Zhang, during the coal-fueled heating period in winter, pollution monitoring should be strengthened, and low-quality coal should not be used for heating and cooking.
He also urged local governments to set strict goals and shoulder responsibilities for the quality of air within their jurisdictions.
The vice premier called for a system that enables coordinated anti-pollution efforts from multiple regions in supervision and law enforcement as well as an environmental information sharing platform.
According to the MEP, air quality in Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and their neighboring provinces has improved in the last five years, with a significant reduction of heavily polluted days, and another five years or more will be taken to further decrease heavy air pollution.
On Sept 12, the ministry came out with a multi-pronged approach to deal with the country's air pollution, focusing on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area, as well as the Yangtze Delta and Pearl River Delta regions.
The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is in need of more attention with higher aims, stricter control measures and greater government support, the ministry said.
In response to the ministry's call, also on Sept 12, the Beijing government issued an air-cleaning plan for 2013 to 2017, aiming at eight programs to reduce emissions.

China on Wednesday urged the United States to "strictly abide by" its commitment to neutrality on the Diaoyu Islands issue.
"We hope the US will abide by its commitment, speak and act cautiously, maintain the regional peace, stability and the overall situation of Sino-US relations with concrete action," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei.
Hong made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to comments by US State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki on the sovereignty disputes.
Psaki said on Tuesday that US position on the Diaoyu Islands has not changed, and it does not take sides on the sovereignty of these islands.
During his meeting last week in Washington with Japan's New Komeito Party chief Natsuo Yamaguchi, US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns reportedly reaffirmed US backing for Japan in its dispute with China" over the Diaoyu Islands, Japanese news agency Kyodo quoted a lawmaker in Yamaguchi's delegation as saying.
"We have noted the US remarks," said Hong, stressing that the Diaoyu Islands and the adjacent islets are China's inherent territories. China's stance on the Diaoyu Islands issue is clear and consistent.
With regard to why there appeared fewer anti-Japanese parades this year, compared to September last year, the spokesman said Japan's illegal "purchase" of Diaoyu Islands last year was an important reason.
"Japan's illegal 'purchase' invaded China's territory and sovereignty, challenged the international order left from the World War II, which evoked Chinese people's rage," Hong said.
He urged Japan to face up to history and reality regarding the Diaoyu Islands issue, to stop violating China's territory and sovereignty, control and solve relevant issues with concrete actions, and remove obstacles hindering the development of China-Japan relations.

Jordanian king calls for Chinese support to resolve the situation as country's influence grows in region
Jordan's King Abdullah II ibn Al-Hussein on Wednesday called on China to exert its influence to help resolve the conflict in Syria. The king's comments came as world powers kicked off negotiations on a draft resolution on Syria's chemical weapons.Experts said China is becoming more involved in the Middle East, both economically and diplomatically, and regional expectations are growing over China's role in helping to solve thorny issues.
"It is in that spirit that I am here today to discuss with you, as a key member of the United Nations Security Council and a friend of Jordan and the Middle East, ways and means of achieving peace, stability, civility and prosperity in our region through an active role in the (Israel-Palestine) peace process as well as that of the Syrian conflict," Abdullah told President Xi Jinping on Wednesday.
Abdullah made the appeal at the start of a meeting between the two leaders at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
The king ended his four-day state visit to China later on Wednesday, after a meeting with Premier Li Keqiang.
Premier Li said China is willing to consolidate political mutual trust, strengthen strategic communication and collaboration with Jordan.
In talks with Xi, Abdullah said Jordan appreciates China's role in promoting the Middle East Peace Process and in searching for a political settlement for the Syrian issue.
Calling Jordan "a good friend and partner" of China, Xi called on the two countries to maintain communications on major international and regional affairs.
Jordan has been trying hard to avoid friction with Syria, its larger neighbor. A Jordanian government spokesman said in late August that the pro-US kingdom will not be a launch pad for attacks on Syria. US troops are stationed in Jordan.
The spokesman said Jordan would prefer a "diplomatic solution to the Syrian crisis".
Beijing and Moscow have both called for a negotiated political settlement to the conflict, which has been ongoing for more than two years.
Abdullah's request came as negotiations among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council began in New York on Tuesday, focusing on a draft resolution on Syria's arsenal of chemical weapons.
The meeting with Xi came a day after UN investigators confirmed the use of sarin nerve gas in an attack on Aug 21. US President Barack Obama has said it is "inconceivable" that anyone other than the Syrian government could have carried out the attack.
But on Wednesday, Russia said the Syrian government had handed over new evidence that implicated rebel forces in the chemical attack.
Hua Liming, former Chinese ambassador to Iran and the United Arab Emirates, said Jordan is deeply concerned about a possible military conflict which could see "Syrian refugees pour into Jordan".
On Monday, Jordanian officials said the number of Syrian refugees crossing into the country rose nearly tenfold last week, to an average 900 people per day, the highest level for months.
Jordan is the second-largest host of Syrian refugees after Turkey. There are more than 560,000 refugees in Jordan.
Abdullah is the latest in a string of Middle Eastern leaders to visit Beijing, and China has frequently dispatched diplomats to the region.
Wu S**e, China's special envoy to the Middle East, visited Jordan in May.
Li Guofu, director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the China Institute of International Studies, said that, in addition to the challenges posed by the refugees, Jordan is also troubled by other problems brought about by the Syrian crisis, such as the impact on trade and possible Syrian retaliation if Jordan is used by the US as a base for attacks.
"In the broad position, Jordan's position is similar to that of Russia and China. However, Jordan is an ally of the US and has relatively good relations with Gulf countries, so naturally there are also differences in their stances," Li said.
He said that despite the Syrian issue, the main focus of King Abdullah's visit was to establish ties with new Chinese leaders.
"By attending the China-Arab States Expo, the king has shown the importance he attaches to the ties," Li said, adding that bilateral trade is growing quickly, although the volume is not yet large.
Earlier in his visit, the king attended an expo that included China and Arab states in Northwest China's Ningxia Hui autonomous region, home to more than 10 percent of China's 20 million Muslims.
