He Paints with Light.

Every line begins with a cut.

Hotarude is a traditional Japanese technique in which tiny openings are carved into porcelain and filled with transparent glaze, allowing light to pass through.

Each cut makes the porcelain more fragile, demanding extraordinary precision and patience.

While most Hotarude patterns are created with dots, Hiroshi Taruta has developed his own style using flowing carved lines.

It is craftsmanship that transforms light into part of the design.

The Beauty of Hotarude

At first glance, it looks like porcelain.

But when light passes through, another beauty appears.

Ceramic artist Hiroshi Taruta creates porcelain using Hotarude, a traditional Japanese technique that allows light to shine through delicate carvings.

Unlike traditional Hotarude, which is often expressed with small dots, Taruta’s work features graceful flowing lines inspired by nature.

Together with the soft blue hue of seihakuji porcelain, his work creates a quiet expression of light unlike any other.
