I close the door of the fridge and look at the magnetic sayings scattered across its front.
“Real women don’t get hot flushes — they get power surges”
“I’d give up on chocolates, but I’m no quitter”
“A good man can make you strong, full of energy and make you take on the world! Coffee does that.”
And Red Wine, I think as I look for the magnet that says “Wine. Now what was the question?”
“GRANDCHIL
DREN are the reward you get for not strangling your teenagers!”
That one was added since our daughter Angela gave birth to a beautiful sweet little baby girl, Alayla. My eyes scan the door as I look to find more sayings that have been added since Alayla’s birth.
“In case of emergency – call Grandma”
“Grandmas are just moms with lots of practice”
“Granny, you’re wiser than an owl !”
The last one is very true. I, Grandma Inge, am wiser than an owl because I’m always right. And so, just like that, “Granny Owl” was born. And since Granny Owl has an arty background and since Granny Owl has all sorts of machines to do arty work with and since Granny Owl has a soft spot for the “not so clever as she is” owls anyway, Granny Owl decided to start making all sorts of Owly Stuff and adding it to her Other Arty Stuff – and selling it to people who love Owly Stuff — and Other Arty Stuff. I have been doing art to a greater or a lesser degree since I can remember. I had a ceramic art studio for a number of years and had the thrill of selling works of art to buyers from all across South Africa (and even Australia), but one day I realised that it was all just becoming too big – and I sold everything. I’d put my love for painting on hold since before I’d started the ceramic business and thought to take it up again. I fixed everything to start painting - and then the quilting bug bit me. I never saw it coming. Still don’t know what the bug looks like, mind you. During this phase, I’d bought and read more books (on quilting) than I’d probably read during all my years of schooling and studying Graphic Design. And then came embroidery. More books. And more machinery. And still no painting. And in between all of this I started casting dainty little soap figurines. Fairies, mostly. And got to learn about stuff that make soap foam nicely. And smell nice. Like Geranium. And Rose. And Lavender. And Liquorice. And lots and lots more. And to display them nicely I carefully place the figurines in cute boxes that I make myself from various forms of cardboard using yet another machine that I simply had to get. Granny Owl. This is who I have become. Granny The Wise I am enjoying this and softly giggle as I turn from the fridge. Grandpa Owl insists that it is the artist in me that makes me do all these crazy, crazy stuff. He also reckons I have been flying over the “cuckoo's nest” wáááy too many times as a youngster and that my blond feathers are a direct results of those flights. But despite my arty inclinations and the colour of my feathers, I am Granny The Wise! No fridge magnet shows him to be GrandPa the wise! I hope you enjoy browsing my site and that you’ll keep coming back once you’ve been here. Feel free to contact me if you have an idea of something that you’d like me to try. But not painting. I’ll do that when I retire. I hope…
