The iconic and eternally popular Subway Tile was born to be an efficient covering for the New York Subway walls in 1904. The original bevelled white tile also reflected light to brighten dim and dingy tunnels. The design drew from Victorian era hygiene obsessions, and made the stations feel modern, clean and safe. Almost overnight these bevelled beauties came to symbolise modernity and cleanliness, migrating quickly into American homes and from there to spaces across the world. And they never left.
