Speech bubbles or balloons are graphic images used in comics, cartoons and illustrations to represent a character’s dialogue or thoughts. They may also be used when a character is gagged or unable to speak. The concept of blowing bubbles, as in soap bubbles, creates airy containers that burst upon contact with an object. The two concepts are often used metaphorically.

We are inundated with speech bubbles “truths and untruths “ through the news and social media. Being exposed to a myriad of speech bubbles and finding many humorous and some upsetting can be overwhelming. We can choose how we interact with all opinions, so-called facts, fictions and emotions. To see the humorous side is important. Laughter is an antidote to negativity. In most of my designs I explore the positive as humour that counteracts the negative. Think of the phrase ”A person is bubbling with humour”.

The legs of the stool represent my thoughts. The conglomerate of bubbles of the seat represent other opinions and thoughts .The various sizes have varying importance.
They can break off ,rollaway.
The color blue signifies truth. This may change to yellow or green with envy.Endless possibilities.

Wet felting is a slow process. Using hot soapy water and friction, shapes are formed. Thoughts come and go as my hands work automatically, trained through years of felting. The felting process is my art therapist.
Homofaber is an exhibition celebrating craft. Open to visitors through September 2026
