Happy Freedom Day South Africa. What an amazing performance. Made my heart glow 💜

This started as a small group of artists wanting to do something heartfelt and authentic at the start of the lockdown. It grew into something much bigger – a national and historic moment of hope that we will be able to look back on with immense pride.

You know these last 21 and a half days have been really strange. For me it has been a time full of love and an overwhelming sense of connectivity, and at the same time so much doubt and fear. Fear for the unknown and fear for people you don't know. It has been an emotional time. I hope we all come out of this with renewed appreciation and love for all of those around us. I cannot wait to hug everyone! :)⠀
⠀
The extra time to think has also allowed some self exploration and if one thing is for sure we are not guaranteed tomorrow. So I have taken that to heart and will do my best to be my authentic self going forward. In every aspect of my life, family, friends, exercise, food, my home, and of course work. So...⠀
⠀
Meet me! I am bold and colourful and love life. I love my amazing, just as colourful family. I love meeting new people. I love listening. I love hugs. I love the sunshine, a lot! I love chocolate and wine! I love playing hockey. I love being outside. I love the beach. ⠀
⠀
I love design. I love art. I love any process that makes you think. I love to design out of-the-box, colourful, punch you in face designs (in the nicest way) When I get an idea it explodes in my head like confetti and then I sort it out and sculpt it into something exciting. I love the entire process. ⠀
⠀
And thats it. I am looking forward to the end of lock down, as I am sure everyone else is too. See you all soon!⠀

Lock Down Tips Day something :)

One of the items on my to do list is to hang all those pictures lying around my house. I just needed to decide how I wanted to do it. See attached my inspiration! If you are unsure on how to display yours, with what you have, see my tips below.

1. If you are like me and buy all sorts of different frames in different colours, my suggestion would be to the shelf option. The shelves can be made from wood that I am sure hubby has hidden somewhere and then painted all the same colour. You must have a paint tin lying around too! Make sure to hang the shelves equal distances apart. This is what will create the balance when using different shaped frames and colours. If you are feeling adventurous add some decor pieces and potted plants in between.

2. If you do have the same sized frames, lucky you! This is fairly simple to create a feature wall with. Just hang them with equal distances all the way round, I normally use 20mm. And make sure the entire collection is centred on the wall top to bottom, and if it is covering most of one wall then centre it left to right too.

3. If you don’t have wood lying around but you do have paint and all differrent sized and coloured frames. Then paint the frames all on colour, this with give it the unity you need to make it balance.

4. Another option with different sized and coloured frames is to print all the photos in black and white, again creating uniformity. If you don’t have photo paper don’t worry, print on plain printer paper, you can always replace it after lock down.

5. The best thing to do with a variety of frames is too lay them all out on the floor until you find a configuration you are happy with, once you are happy take a photo! If you have plenty time, which you probably do, it’s a good idea to make templates of each frame and stick (with masking tape) them to the wall in the positions you are happy with and then start drilling!

6. Don't get hung up with what is in the frames, it could be a favourite saying, a graphic image that you like, an umbrella, your kids finger painting, whatever makes your heart happy works :)

I hope this helped and if you have any questions just add it to the comments! Please share your work with me too!

Day 7 and 8… I think.

Ok I think it is fairly obvious that I am not fabulous at doing daily posts :) So I’m just going to continue with tips, as and when I do.

This morning I was chatting to a friend who asked me if there was any way she could buy some paint during lock down as she would like to do some DIY. Unfortunately I do not know of anyone selling paint now, I don’t think it is considered an essential service. So instead I asked her what she’s got stored from previous paint escapades and I would help her mix a colour!

So she looked and I mixed poster paint at home to mimic what colours she had and together we mixed a new colour for her dining room! It was so much fun. Now we wait for the result. She promises to share!

So my tip today is if you are wishing you could paint but don’t have the right colour just go have a look at what you do have and you might be surprised!

I think Im going to do the same and paint mountains on my bedroom wall this weekend :)

Day 5 and 6 - Tips on how to decorate a room.

It turns out I am quite bad at remembering to do these posts!

I hope you all had some fun doing your floor plans and playing with positioning your furniture. I hope you also planned your walls! If you have done this please share your plans with me, I would love to see them! You can add them to the comments or PM me.

Today I wanted to talk about colour schemes. In hind sight this should have been done around day 1 but as I said this was not a planned out. I’m sure in your initial inspiration research you have found a basic colour scheme. And once you start finding individual items, like cushions, paint colours, furniture, rugs etc, you will need to stick to a scheme.

Each interior style normally has a colour palette that goes with it, but of course there are no rules. The image attached shows which colour palette “belongs” to which style. Use them as a guideline when looking for your pieces of furniture.

You can search thousands of colour palettes on pinterest. Go have a look!

Try to make sure you are using the same proportions of colour in your interior as you see in the colour scheme. For example in traditional the majority of the colour scheme is creams and whites with about 1/5 of a darker brown. In this scheme you will probably use creams on the walls and larger pieces and have features in the darker browns, like a signature chair.

This, of course, is the just a very small piece of how colour works and a very basic guide for your colour selection. If you would like to dive into colour further there is so much information available online. And if you would like some guidance just drop me a message and ill be happy to help. :)

Happy colouring!

How to Draw a Floor Plan - A Beautiful Mess

Day 3 and 4- Tips on how to decorate a room

I took full advantage of Sunday and did nothing all day! So now we will do 2 days of tips in one :)

I hope you enjoyed searching images on pinterest and have managed to get a good idea of what you would like the space to look like. Next step is too make sure that all the amazing things you have found actually work in the room you have chosen.

The only way to figure this out is to draw the floor plan of your room. All you need is a tape measure, piece of paper and a pencil. I like to use grid paper as then it is easy to scale your drawing and add the furniture into it too. Follow this link for a step by step guide on drawing a floor plan, there are lots of other handy tips on this website too! https://abeautifulmess.com/2015/09/how-to-draw-a-floor-plan.html

Once you have drawn up the floor start mapping out where you will place all the amazing things you have found. Don’t forget to plan the walls too! Which will be painted what colour, are you wallpapering? Putting up a shelf with art work? Hanging artwork?

It’s a great idea to draw the furniture and cut them out so you can play around with placement before creating the final plan. A couple of things to bear in mind:

Between all furniture you need a walking space of at least 700mm - 900mm.
Placement and heights of doors and windows are important.
Make sure you account for opening spaces, like cupboard doors.

If you are quite tech savvy, there are some great apps to help you draw up a plan. There are also amazing 3D apps which are fairly easy to use and you can place furniture art and decor with them.

Check out Magicplan for measuring and drawing floor plans
Room Sketcher, Live Home and Sweet Home 3D are all free apps that are great to use too!

Enjoy!

Day 2- Tips on how to decorate a room.

Now that you have taken the quiz and know what interior design style you are, or at least are a little closer to figuring it out, it’s time to search for those inspirational pics.

Firstly you need to a pick a room. I would suggest a bedroom as its probably one of the simplest to start with. The items required are pretty standard and easily found. Go onto Pinterest and start searching for ideas. Start your search with “Contemporary Bedroom” or whatever style you are. We you see something you like click on it, it will take you to that pic and then show similar ideas underneath.

I suggest saving all the pictures that speak to you for about the first 30min and then going into your board and sifting through them. You’ll quickly see what has drawn you to those images. Pick a few that are your favourite and then decide what you love about each. For example in one image it might be the wallpaper, in another image perhaps it’s the headboard, and so on.

I like to use Keynote on my mac or if you have a pc then power point, and put together a page of my favourite images. If you are old school then print out the pics and stick them to a page. I always refer back to my favourites page, as its easy to get swept away when starting to look for more inspiration.

Once you have your inspiration board you are ready to go onto the next step, which I’ll share tomorrow.

Happy pinning!

Attached is a board I have done for my own room, who knows maybe I will actually get to decorate it this lock down!

Know your Interior Design Style

Just for fun, during our 21 lock down period I would like to share with you my tips on how to decorate a room in your house. Each day (hopefully) I will share a post with each step to achieving your design. This is not something I have planned, I decided it on a whim so please forgive me any spelling mistakes, grammar errors, reaching step 3 then going back to step 2, or any other mistake I may make.

My aim is to have shared enough information with you that by the end of the lock down you will be able to decorate a room in your house and can then implement it once the lock down is lifted. So…

Step 1- Take this Quiz and find out what your interior design style is. Then use your results to define your searches on pinterest or google. I love using pinterest as there is never nonsense in between, it’s easy to define your searches and you can save as many images to one board as you like. More on this tomorrow 😉

Enjoy!

Take the quiz to find out your interior design style is! Once you have a better understanding of your design style you can define your searches when looking for inspirational images.
