Title: When the Owl Calls my Name.
Size: 152cm x 92cm
Medium: This is a 3D painting on boxed canvas using acrylics, gold leaf and finishing plaster.
I have depicted this Brown Hyena
in the Deadvlei of Nambia.
Deadvlei, or "dead marsh," is a breathtaking, white clay pan surrounded by, at times, the highest red sand dunes in the world (300-400m), located inside Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. Famous for its 600-900 year-old, scorched, non-decomposed camel thorn tree skeletons, it offers a surreal photogenic landscape.
When the Owl Calls My Name:
This title draws from an African proverb that says when an owl calls your name, death is near.
In this artwork, the brown hyena walks with its head low, a posture of cautious vigilance that reflects the fragile existence of this often-overlooked species.
Every careful step embodies resilience in the face of real threats: habitat loss, human conflict, and population decline.
The proverb serves as a quiet warning β not of superstition, but of the urgency to protect and conserve.
Proceeds from this work support brown hyena research and conservation, turning awareness into action.
