They’re ready to hit the road with the very first load of Peony Season 2026 deliveries! 🌸

It’s going to be a sunny, hot day here in Nelson Mandela Bay, so thank you, Juanre Campher (and Pixie!) for helping to es**rt this precious peony cargo safely to its new homes. 🚗🌸

There’s something rather lovely about seeing all these carefully wrapped little Inge van Zyl bundles packed and ready to go.

😍After only 6 hours ⌚️ of hydration 💦

From every peony-variety received, I select 5 buds (at random) after allocating and wrapping client orders.

I trim their stems, remove excess leafs and place them in cool, clean water, into my own vase.

Not necessarily only for quality assurance BUT mostly because the transformation of each individual, tightly closed bud - within a few hours - NEVER seizes to amaze 🥰

The incredible peony - tight little marble-like balls, soaking up water, unfurling satin petals, with emerald green 🍃 plumping up...is an exquisitely exciting process and privilege to experience.

You won't believe it, until you witness it with your own eyes 😇

🌸MEET THE PEONY - CORAL CHARM🌸

If there is one thing Coral Charm does particularly well, it is putting on a spectacular show!!

She arrives as a tightly closed bud in that almost impossible-to-describe coral-pink…

and then slowly begins to unfold.

First comes the brilliant coral. Then warmer peach and apricot tones begin to appear, before the flower eventually softens towards creamy ivory.

And because each stem is at a slightly different stage, a bunch of Coral Charm can become a little collection of colours all on its own. 🤍

Coral Charm is a semi-double hybrid peony, bred by peony hybridiser (what a title 😃) Samuel Wissing, from Illinois, USA in 1955 and officially registered in 1964 (almost 62 years ago!). And almost 40 years ago, in 1986, the cultivar was awarded the "American Peony Society’s" Gold Medal

What I love most about this variety though, is that you don't simply receive "a flower". You receive the beginning of a little transformation journey.

This is "Coral Charm" - this week's peony. And next week, we meet another 😉

❄️ PART TWO - "From cold room to your home. The journey doesn't end when the flowers are cut"

These export-quality peonies are luxurious, delicate flowers, and maintaining their quality is a little bit like maintaining a cold chain.

The aim is to keep them cool from the moment they are harvested until they reach their final destination - your home 🏡

🌅 Early morning harvest: peonies are cut as tight, closed buds before the fields become heated by the sun

❄️ Cold packing:
They are sorted, graded and bundled inside dedicated cold facilities, limiting their exposure to ambient heat.

🚚 Refrigerated transport:
For local destinations, peonies are dry-stored (not in water) and move directly into refrigerated distribution trucks. cold trucks can leave the farm as early as 3 a.m., keeping the flowers chilled during transit.

✈️ Air freight:
For flowers travelling further into South Africa, such as to Gqeberha via Cape Town International Airport, they travel through temperature-controlled air cargo and remain refrigerated at the airport depot until collection.

🌡️ Cold storage at destination:
Once the consignment reach studio, they are carefully unpacked and go straight into a specialised floral holding cooler, generally maintained at around 2–4°C, still dry-stored (not touching water, exposure to light or atmospheric moisture. Yes - we even monitor humidity and condensation in fridges to avoid fungal growth)

And that is where these beauties chillax - staying there until they're distributed and delivered to your door ❤️

Because with peonies, cold is their friend. The less unnecessary warmth they experience along the journey, the more energy they retain for what comes next: opening beautifully, slowly and dramatically in your home. 🌸

And that is the journey your Nini Bloem peonies make:

Mountain farm → cold room → refrigerated transport → airport → air freight → Gqeberha → our fridge → your vase.

Quite an extraordinary journey for five little stems. 🤍

Sending strength to the entire team at Adene's farm flowers after the devastating rainfall and flooding affecting parts of the Winelands. 💔

Behind every stem are real people, farms, seasons, weather, hard work and deep care for the land. Seeing the impact on one of our trusted local growers is incredibly heartbreaking.

As a small floral studio that sources seasonally and intentionally, we may also experience some short-term shifts in flower availability over the coming weeks while farms recover and regroup.

For now, we are simply holding space for the people behind the flowers and sending strength to everyone affected by the recent storms 🙏

This week has been a beautiful reminder of how much heart exists in this little business of mine 🤍

To every client who ordered, shared a post, sent an enquiry, encouraged me, or chose to support Nini Bloem this Mother’s Day - a deep, heartfelt thank you.

And to all the moms, grandmothers, mother figures, nurturers and gentle hearts being celebrated this weekend:
May you feel seen, appreciated and deeply loved 🌸

Creating flowers for people’s homes, tables and special moments will never be something I take lightly.
