❓ Hoe wil ek hê moet my huis lyk?

Macramé's popularity faded, but resurged in the 1970s for making wall hangings, clothing accessories, bedspreads, tablecloths, draperies, plant hangers & other furnishings, adding a unique bohemian, earthy theme to any home.

Cords made of cotton, twine, linen, h**p, jute, leather or yarn are used in this artistic form of creativity.

Craft pieces are often made in combination of both the knots & various beads (glass, wood), shells gemstones or pendants.

Modern Macramé is becoming very popular, adding warmth to any vocal point in your home, creating masterpieces big or small, depending on the size of the room, wall or corner you plan to decorate in your own, unique style.

Our Macramé journey continues from the Iberian Peninsula to Spain, then Italy, especially in the region of Liguria, where after it spread through Europe.

In England, it was introduced at the court of Mary II in the late 17th century. Queen Mary taught it to her ladies-in-waiting.

The art of Macramé was most popular in the Victorian era. It adorned most homes in items such as tablecloths, bedspreads & curtains.

The popular "Sylvia's Book of Macramé Lace" (1882) showed ~ How to work rich trimmings for black & coloured costumes, both for home wear, garden parties, seaside ramblings, and balls ~ fairylike adornments for household and underlinens... "

It was a specialty in Genoa & was popular in the 19th century. There, it's roots were in a 16th-century technique of knotting lace, known as "punto a groppo".

Sailors made Macramé objects while not busy at sea & sold or bartered them when they landed. Nineteenth-century British & American sailors made hammocks, bell fringes & belts from Macramé. They called the process "square knotting" after the knot they used most often. Sailors also called macramé "McNamara's lace"

The history of Macramé

Research takes as back as far as 2300BC to one of the earliest recorded uses of macramé-style knots as decoration, appeared in the carvings of the Babylonians & Assyrians.

Fringe-like plaiting & braiding adorned the costumes of the time & were captured in their stone statuary.

Arab weavers called this kind of decorated cloth embroidery "miqrama" ~ it involved knotting excess thread along the edges of hand-loomed fabrics such as towels, shawls & veils into decorative fringes.

The word macramé could be derived from the Andalusian-Arabic version "makramiyya", believed to mean striped towel, ornamental fringe or embroidered veil.

Another school of thought indicates that it came to Europe not from Arabic but via the Turkish version "makrama" ~ napkin or towel.

The decorative fringes also helped to keep flies off camels and horses in northern Africa.

Join us tomorrow when we journey further along the Macramé route.

What is Macramé?

Macramé is a powerful form of creative art, using knotting techniques & not weaving or knitting techniques.

No machines are used, thus each beautiful created artwork involves hours of knotting, creating masterpieces from cotton cord, one beautiful knot at a time.

The primary knots of macramé are the square (or reef knot) & forms of "hitching"- various combinations of half hitches. It was long crafted by sailors, especially in elaborate or ornamental knotting forms, to cover anything from knife handles to bottles to parts of ships.
