New look. Same soul. Even deeper purpose.
As an Art Educator, I believe in the power of creativity to challenge, inspire, and reshape the world around us. Today, I chose to express myself through a new hairstyle plaited hair. While some may see this change and label it negatively, I see it as an extension of my artistic identity and cultural pride.
This moment reminds me of the Labelling Theory in education the idea that the labels society places on individuals can deeply influence how they are perceived and how they perceive themselves. Too often, outward appearances are used to define character, intellect, or capability. But as educators, we are called to break these biases and see beyond the surface.
Art teaches us that beauty takes many forms. It encourages us to explore, to be bold, and to honour self-expression. As an art teacher, I stand for creativity without constraint. I believe that embracing who we are authentically and unapologetically is one of the greatest lessons we can teach our students.
Let’s shift the narrative. Let’s raise a generation that values originality, not conformity. Let’s celebrate art not only in galleries and classrooms but in our daily lives, our style, and our spirit.
