KANAZAWA GOLD LEAF

We had the privilege of stepping into a Kanazawa gold leaf workshop, witnessing the delicate art of a craft mastered over 400 years. Watching the artisans at work—meticulous, passionate, and unbelievably skilled—was mesmerizing.

Hammered to an astonishing 0.1 micron—nearly 10,000 times thinner than a human hair—this golden marvel adorns ancient temples, haute couture, fine art, and even gourmet delights. More than luxury, Kanazawa gold is history, beauty, and brilliance in its purest form.

DISCOVERING KYOTO’S TIMELESS CRAFTSMANSHIP

Kyoto is renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship, where ancestral traditions are proudly preserved and passed down through generations with humility. Many workshops have stood the test of time, carrying decades of history. Some creations, crafted by an artisan’s father or grandfather, are cherished as invaluable legacies.

Meeting these artisans was truly fascinating—their extreme humility and mastery of each meticulous gesture, repeated until perfection, left a lasting impression. We explored workshops specializing in dyeing, embroidery, and metalwork. Along the way, we even met a vegetable carving artisan—proof that in Japan, craftsmanship extends to every detail, always striving for excellence in simplicity.

These encounters were a true delight and an inspiring introduction to the world of Japanese craftsmanship.

ANAÏS DUPLAN: WEAVING ELEGANCE WITH HORSEHAIR

In Anaïs DUPLAN’s hands, horsehair transcends tradition to become pure artistry — wild, untamed, and mesmerizingly tactile. Originally commissioned for an equestrian exhibit, this seemingly stubborn material has become her signature medium, breathing life into sculptural marvels and visual poetry.

With a background in textile design, Anaïs sculpts softness into rigidity, transforming strands of horsehair into abstract masterpieces and intricate compositions. The raw, organic textures dance with light and shadow, blurring the boundaries between craft and contemporary art.

Her inspirations? A childhood on the volcanic soils of Reunion Island, vibrant journeys across Africa, and the beauty of elemental materials — rattan, straw, and leather, all seamlessly intertwined with horsehair to create a story both timeless and modern.

Now, whispers of future lighting installations hint at a new frontier, where illuminated horsehair will sculpt ethereal spaces of elegance and wonder.

Discover a world where nature, innovation, and art converge.

PARIS DECO OFF

To mark the end of Paris Deco Off week, here are a few images highlighting a current trend: warm, rich colors inspired by tribal aesthetics—earth, sand, desert, and the South. Furniture lines are embracing and comfortable, textiles are soft, and craftsmanship is omnipresent in embroidery, finishes, and the use of natural, unexpected materials. 2025 is set to be all about desert tones or deep wine hues—undeniably artisanal.

VIRGINIE BRUNET: CRAFTING A FRENCH VISION OF SHOU-SUGI-BAN

Continuing our exploration of shou-sugi-ban and its role in modern design, we’re excited to feature the work of Virginie Brunet, a talented artisan discovered at the recent Immersion/s fair.

After 20 years in digital art direction, Virginie transitioned into the world of fine woodworking and art furniture. Her approach is rooted in traditional Japanese craftsmanship and the “wabi-sabi” philosophy, which celebrates the beauty of imperfection and the passage of time.

Virginie’s techniques are truly innovative, enabling her to work on large surfaces and, most notably, three-dimensional volumes. This expands the potential of shou-sugi-ban, applying it to furniture pieces, transforming aged objects, and creating unique designs.

MARIE DROUET - THE ART OF BASKETRY

We all know wicker objects—often seen as mundane or purely functional. Marie Drouet transforms this perception, elevating wickerwork to an art form.

Based in the Paris region, she crafts unique pieces, bespoke lighting, and exceptional décor that combine technical mastery, boundless creativity, and an unwavering attention to detail.

Committed to the ecological values of this biodegradable and renewable material, Marie collaborates closely with local willow growers, honoring every strand and every bark. By blending wicker with other materials—bronze, leather, glass, or wood—she creates works that forge a dialogue between tradition, craftsmanship, and contemporary art.

Marie surprises, inspires, and reimagines an ancient material with a distinctly modern vision.

STÉPHANIE LACOSTE: the craft of weaving like you’ve never experienced it before

Meeting Stéphanie Lacoste is a journey filled with continuous surprises, each unveiling a different aspect of her remarkable talent and extensive expertise in materials, their interactions, and the art of weaving. This creative fusion results in a stunning variety of decorative options. Within her workshop, Stéphanie, alongside her team, skillfully weaves together stone paper, straw, metallic wires, wood, and an array of other materials. She excels in using natural dyes and has a particular appreciation for the warm gleam of straw. Her weaving looms and threads serve as her medium for connecting with diverse cultures, traditions, and individuals, allowing her to express herself and foster dialogue. We were both inspired and impressed! With an invigorating spark of creative energy, we eagerly anticipate collaborating with this extraordinary craftswoman and artist on significant projects. KAREN GRIGORIAN - MAISON DU PLI

Karen Grigorian is among the few remaining artisan plisseurs in Paris. With great dedication, this skilled master crafts his own cardboard molds and creates exquisite, unique pleats for both fashion and interior decor. To bring his pleating visions to life, he has invested in a remarkable steam oven, enabling him to produce singular pieces up to 5 meters in size. This is a remarkable achievement and a highlight of our experience at Immersion/s. We look forward to collaborating with this talented artist on our upcoming projects.
